IMO that is a terrible idea. If you already need new struts, cutting springs isn't going to help and will most definitely worsen the handling. I would suggest you wait until you get the new springs and struts before you resort to cutting them. Suspension is no joke to mess with. Being an "above average mechanic" you should already know that.
