David McDavid Acura - Austin - hope you haven't gotten your coolant flushed by them

I called the dealership yesterday to order a part, and I ended up asking for some coolant. This is the conversation I had w/the Service guy, Armando:

Me: How much do you guys sell the Type II coolant for?
Him: $12.xx/gallon
Me (talking out loud): So since the car take 9.2 qts (according to the owner's manual), I'll need 3 gallons.
Him: Well, when we flush, we only use a gallon.
Me: For a 91 Legend?
Him: Yes.
Me: Dude, you know there's 4 qts in a gallon, right? So that means that it should be roughly 2.5 gallons
Him: Well, let me talk to the tech to make sure. (comes back) My guy is Acura certified, blah, blah, blah, and they know.
Me: Okay, dude, thanks.

So I go down this evening to pick up my part, and I'm talking to the parts guy, Steve.
Me: I have a quick question about coolant. I have a 91 Legend, and you guys sell the Type II coolant, right?
Him: Yes.
Me: That's premixed, right?
Him: Yes.
Me: 50/50, right?
Him: Yes
Me: So how much coolant does it take to flush my system?
Him: 1 gallon is what we use.
Me: Since when?
Him: Since always.
Me: So before when it wasn't premixed, you guys used how much?
Him: One gallon.
Me: Okay, so if you're only using 1 gallon of Type II coolant, what else are you putting in after you use that gallon?
Him: We top it off with water.
Me: So you put in another what, almost gallon and a half of water?
Him: Yup.
Me: Doesn't it make since that since you guys switched from straight coolant to 50/50, you shouldn't be adding any water b/c you're now diluting the solution to 75/25?
Him: Well....um....oh wow.

Yeah, exactly. So I got my parts at cost.

That's why if you want something done right, you do it yourself. The only person I trust with my car is me. Especially with stuff that can be easily half-@$$ed, like fluids. I do all my fluid changes myself.

Damn, that sucks. I've wanted to take my car to the dealership now that it's been over 150k miles. I guess maybe I should be more wary.

Drain/Fill?

Is he talking about a Drain/Fill and referring to it as a flush? Of course a drain fill won't take nearly as much as a flush since you're not getting much more than what's in the radiator.

They were dumb too, but for like 6 months I had access to the whole shop which was pretty nice. That's where I fell in love with this car...I drove a customer's 94 6spd coupe and said "man, I gotta get me one of these someday!"

Also took another customers 97 NSX up to 150 on Hwy 360...
