Denso Iridium spark plugs?
i just bought some Denso Iridum spark plugs from Ebay and am going to change the spark plugs very soon. i have several questions though. The plugs are supposedly pre-gapped at the factory to .044 inches. The owner's manual and helms manual state that the gap should be between .039 and .043 inches. This probably applies to the NGK and Nippondenso plugs. But the Denso website says that the iridium plugs don't need to re-gapped. Should i just install the plugs as they are?
Also, the Denso website states different torque recommendations for the spark plugs then the owner's and helms manuals. Actually even the specs in the helms manual(13 lb-ft) and the owner's manual(16 lb-ft) are different. According to Denso, the IK20 Iridium plugs are supposed to be tightened to about 15-22 lb-ft for aluminum heads. Those settings seem a little high, and 7 lb-ft seems like a large range. The Denso website also uses separate torque settings for lubricated and non-lubricated spark plugs. The lubricated plugs are supposed to require about half the torque to avoid overtightening. So has anyone installed the Iridiums? How much did you torque the plugs? Should i use anti-seize grease? The plugs supposedly last 100,000 miles so i don't think i'll ever change the plugs again (hopefully). Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. |

Thanks for the replies.
Well, i guess i'll just torque the plugs to about 15 lb-ft (the minimum setting according to Denso and between the settings of the Helms and owner's manual). Isn't there a 3-5% margin of error with most torque wrenches? The one i have is a 150 lb wrench (seems too large for the job). i'd probably get more accuracy with a lighter one. One last question i just thought of. Does the battery need to be disconnected at all when i change the spark plugs? |
