Differential Fluids....

Hey guys. I tried searching aroudn for this but didn't really find what I was looking for.

I want to change my diff fluid, the manual recommends 80W-140 gear oil.

Would the diff benefit from a synthetic gear oil, like redline or something?

When I searched no-one had any results on doing this, but the dates on those posts were august of '02. Has anyone else had any experience with synthetic gear oil for the diff?

Nick

I don't know about the benefits or not, but I'm running Redline MT-90 on my Differentials and Tranny for a while now, and it has been fine. You can try the MT-90, and I'm sure that you won't have any problems at all like me.

I agree with Alexander. I got the MT-90 for my trans, then realized I could use it in my diff. I ended up getting some Valvoline Synthetic Gear Oil instead. If I ever need to change the diff again I am going to use RedLine. I would go for it. I havn't seen anyone say it can hurt like they do about synthetic oil in the engine.
Later!

Using the Redline M/T 90, wouldn't that be too thin?

Does synthetic last longer as well in the diff?

Thanks for the info guys.

Nick, as far as I know, the MT90 is within spec of what our car differential and transmission oil requirements. Don't use MTL though, that would be too thin.

Looking from the results when I change my tranny and diff fluid last time, I think ANY oil can last forever inside. When I drain mine, with about 50k miles probably, it is still very clear and clean like new. Not much particulates inside too, well I try this by touching the oil and rubbing it between my fingers, so maybe micron sized particulates are there, but It is just too small for me to feel hehee............

trans and diff oil is heavy and when churned for several years the paraffin (wax) seperates out like butter from cream. Replace it once a year. I have used Castrol GL5 80/90 or Pennzoil GL5 80/90 for years since my formua and production racing days. Don't use a GL6 unless you are running a limited slip w/ clutch pack.
