What a pain!!!!
so, were they the new gaskets or is this shotty work from the place you got it done? clearly the full turn of the wrench is evidence of poor work, but the REAL question is, are you 100% sure they used the new HG? and if so, did the gasket simply deteriorate because of that full turn so coolant and oil have gotten to it, or is it truly a poor gasket?

of course, I wouldn't trust such a thing for such a vital component, but the questions are for can you do anything about the shop?

I would love..

to take it back to the shop and tell them to put it together using the right torque specs, the gaskets were "very" saturated with coolant when I pulled them so I'm not entirely sure they were torqued correctly. I ordered a set of felpro intake and head gaskets and will put them on in a day or so. I imagine I should have the heads pressure tested as well. this really bites as I paid 265.00 to have them pressure test and mill the heads two weeks ago.

Worked good so far.

I think that the mechanic that you went to didn't do the correct torque and/or didn't use new head bolts. Not to mention he didn't have to worry about you returning due to failures since the gaskets were from you and they say they didn't guarantee the work. On Subaru cars you have to torque, let off 90 degrees, let off 90 degrees again, torque, torque, then 90 degrees. I used an Evergreen gasket kit from eBay as well on my old 1999 Subaru Forester L(and other cars) that I rebuilt the engine on to give to me niece and that was 3 years and about 40,000 miles ago. Not a problem at all since then. Sometimes people just take off the old gaskets and don't get all of the old gasket off the heads or block which will cause a weak point in the gasket. Either that or the head is too warped for the gasket to seal. What I mentioned above is the majority(90%) of why these gaskets fail for people that do it themselves. I would have told them to replace them or you would take them to court. They might not have guaranteed the gaskets but they do guarantee the work(labor), so even buying another set of gaskets at $100 it's better than $1800.

Skill level: Master Mechanic(14 years), have rebuilt over 80 engines ranging from Toyota to Bentley to Lambo, 1930 to 2011.
