Dyno Results.....CAI tested vs Stock Airbox

Alright, well I went to the dyno today, mostly to check the difference between the stock airbox and the CAI that I make. The stock air box did NOT have the resonator attached, so the ratings would have been a little bit worse for the stock one.

My CAI peak power is 167.3 @ 5300rpm
My CAI peak torque is 177.1 @ 4300rpm

Stock airbox peak power is 166.6 @ 5300rpm
Stock airbox peak torque is 173.2 @ 4500rpm

That is top end. On both sides, the power/torque drop off VERY rapidly after the peaks. Horsepower stays up all the way, but tq is basically dead at redline for type 1s. We have about 70tq at that time. For you type 1 manual people, you need to shift at around 5700 rpm to stay in your max power. I am going to test my car again at the track, with this meathod to see what kind of difference I get.

The LOW end of this, the differences are ASTONISHING. at 3200rpm, the difference is 21.4tq, and 13hp. at 4000rpm the difference is 13tq and 8hp. This makes sense though, because of the VIS.

The stock airbox had some very bad drops on power however. It had a 20tq drop at 3000rpm, and between 3600 and 4000, it goes down again. Horsepower also drops at 3000rpm.

With the CAI. There really isnt a major drop in tq, at 3700, it goes down 3-4tq, and then keeps going up. Horsepower is VERY linear throughout the entire test.

Also, I had the A/F ratio checked, and the CAI did not make the car run rich at all. The two graphed lines for CAI and stock airbox are intertwined throughout the tests.

I am going to get a spreadsheet tomorrow of the differences in each space, but I will try to scan the graph this evening.

I will let you all know very soon, I am going to get a Y pipe made within a few weeks, and will update to say the gains for it.

GALLERY AT TULSA DYNO SITE

Alright, you might be able to see behind the MAX POWER part, it says 172.8 or something like that.

Pictures can be found on my webiste. http://g2legend.com

Picture page with cai is http://g2legend.com/index2.htm
The picture at the bottom of the index2 page is a semi gloss powdercoated intake. That was the 2nd version of the kit, which had a better design on the piping.

what other mods you have done? 167hp is pretty low for a TYPE I with CAI, Although your TQ is high.

arent those numbers really close? it seams like you gained (by looking at those numbers) a total .7 horse in power and 3.9 in torque?

whats up with that?

that is top end ONLY remember. Ill post up the graph pretty soon. Top end is really not very important, esp the peak horsepower. because you are shifting at the peak, or right after peak. the largest gains are at the lower RPMS where the car upshifts to.

there is only a 1hp gain at 5500rpm, but theres a 15hp gain at 3500rpm, or 4000rpm. which is where your car will start at with the next gear.

RangerJoe I'm very interested in your CAI, do you have a picture of what it would look like in red, or maybe silver if possible? Also does it turn your check engine light on? I'm not sure if having all the lines disconnected will affect my car, because it has TCS. I can't wait to see your dyno graph. Some more lowend would be nice!

No. My check engine light has NEVER come on. As you will see in the graph, it will not change your A/F ratio at all. I do not have a pic of what it would look like in red, all of my orders thus far have been for black ones. You can however choose between what kind of coating you would have. You can do high gloss powdercoating, semi gloss, or a flat color. Flat still is shiny, just not very much. On my website, on the parts page, the black one at the bottom in the pics is a semi gloss, and if you AIM me, or email me, I can send you a pic of what the high gloss looks like. Changing those hoses really dont make any difference, You are still getting air through those breathers, and the air is still going to be clean, so it doesnt really matter if you have the hoses on the intake, or the separate tubes.
