Exhaust Gas Recirculation System feeds a small amount of the exhaust gases back into the intake to be reburned which basically makes sure that all the fuel is burned. I think its controlled by a solenoid or two. Other than that each car has its own timing of when its used, mostly at cold start and during idle.

Which particular emission did it fail and by how much?

You should ahve a paper telling you:

HC
CO%
NOx

Depending on which one is high, it changes the scenerio of what could be wrong with your car.

For example I failed mine too... but my HC ppm and CO% are extremely on the low end well within limits while my NOx ppm is more than double the limit!

The more info you can give us, the better for us to help.

Welcome to my situation

I've been battling the causes of my NO to fail.

By how much did it fail? Any check engine light on?

From what I have researched the #1 reason for NO to be high is EGR system failure (its purpose is to keep NO low) and/or bad cat. NO is caused by high combustion temperatures. However some members had EGR systems not working and PASS the emissions test... strange.

There is already discussion of ideas to try and what to do for my situation (same thing like yours) in this thread:

Failed 'functional' Ca. emission test (EGR) ???

The thread was first about cleaning out an EGR system and if you continue towards the end, there is discussion of what to try. Some good info there IMO.
