Let me take a stab at this one
![]() When the engine rocks under load (like when you mash the gas to the floor) you're loosing that torque because it's absorbed in the rubber engine/transmission mounts. That creates a lag between the time you smash the gas, and the car reacts...not much, but about a second from what I can remember on my car. The engine damper works like a standard shock absorber, but a VERY stiff one. It bolts to the engine, and then to the firewall and it keeps the engine in it's place, and doesn't allow it to rock in its mounts. What you gain, is much improved throttle response which means quicker acceleration (especially from a stop or coming out of a turn under throttle.) It should also improve the life of the rubber engine mounts, and transmission mounts because the movement is limited. That hasn't been confirmed yet because these damper kits are fairly new and I don't think anybody has driven the 30K miles or so that it usually takes to break a rear tranny mount. Let me know if you have anymore questions. I'm kinda like an expert on them now! ![]() |

Fairly easy install as well. You need some bigger wrenches like a 17mm and a 19mm but there are detailed instructions with every kit that include pictures. And no, you don't have to take the entire engine out. In fact, there is only the OEM strut bar and one bracket that have to be removed, everything else just bolts in. |

I've a few questions:
-does installing the engine damper require any drilling or any equipment beyond simple tools? -does the engine damper put extra strain on the firewall that may cause problems in the long run? More info please =)

Essentially, my wrench set now includes the following that are needed to install, or modify the engine damper kit that I sell: 10mm 17mm (x2) 19mm (x2) 21mm 1/2" 15/16" 1 1/16" In desiging this kit, I was concerned that the firewall mounting points wouldn't be strong enough, and would bend over time, but I was assured that they would work. I've measured the gap between the firewall and the engine no less than 5 times since I've had the first prototype on (over 5 months) and it hasn't moved - even with me beating the crap out of it when testing the prototype, and then a track day at the NALM in Vegas and another Autox event. I think that unless you're making close to 400 at the wheels, it shouldn't be a problem.........but when I get there, I'll let you know! ![]() |
