Unhappy Estimated cost for changing rear Calipers

Look like the frozen caliper is coming back to haunt me. Can someone tell me a ball park number for replacing the rear caliper (just 1)? Should I do both rear calipers at the same time?

I'm not sure if my caliper is frozen or not yet. I take my car to my mechanics last week to get the brake pads changed (rear brake pads) and my mechanic told me that the left rear caliper is frozen. He then free it and apply lubricant to the caliper to make it move easier. However, after driving for 30 min (and I do this several times now), I can feel that the left rear wheel (the one with the frozen caliper before) is getting warm. Every wheel is a littl ebit warm but this wheel is a littl ebit warmer than the rest. And I tested this 3-4 tims already.

I took it to my mechanic this morning and he find it strange as well but he is not sure yet. He told me to drive my car for another couple of days so the wears on the brake pads might be more obvious if indeed the caliper is the culprit.

What I don't understand is if my caliper is frozen, why wouldn't the wheel get very hot. It is just barely warm by touch. I also touch the disc itself and the brake pad and they are just warm, not hot. Is it possible that the left rear brake pad is doing more work than the others? In the other word, is it possible that the caliper is fine but just the left rear brake pad is working harder than the rests? Thanks.

If you have a caliper sticking, you won't be able to touch the rotor (disk) without burning yourself. If it really is sticking, you would likely have an odor, you know.. like a hot brake or clutch smell .

Try this... find a empty, basically flat parking lot. get the car rolling very slowly and shift it into neutral. Let it roll until it stops. Pay attention to how the car stops. If you have a bad dragging problem, the car will not stop smoothly... it will kinda jerk to a stop. If your brakes are releasing like they should, you should get a very smooth stop and maybe a slow roll in the opposite direction if there is any kind of slope to the parking lot.

As for cost, no idea. I bet the part is better than $150 per side, plus labor.

As for doing both sides.. that's up to you, if one got stuck, the other may not be far behind, but to do both sides... lots of money. Replacing both calipers is not necessary though.

Thanks. I will try Searchin4acoupe tip. The thing is to change the rear caliper, I would have to either lift or jack the car up. Right now, I have no jack and it is freezing outside right now (my parking lot is an open lot).

So basically if the caliper lock up, the disc brake should be very hot, right? I definitely can touch the disc and the outer brake pad after driving for 1 hour this morning. It is just barely warm, not hot at all.

You could still have a caliper failing to fully retract. Check the amt of pad on both axles. The one failing to fully retract will evidence more wear.

I replaced all of my calipers this past summer. Best price was from NAPA. The rears were about $100 each.

YES, FOR ONE SIDE.
IF YOUR CALIPER STICK, YOU WILL END UP CHANGING DISK ALSO.
DISK WILL GET RED HOT AND WILL BENT.
