Expansion Valve

I was just curious. When changing an expansion valve do you have to pull out the whole dash like you would changing the evaporator or can it be accessed without pulling everything apart.

No, not the whole dash board. The expansion valve is located behind the glovebox and the air filter. When the A/C starts to get warm, take a look in the slot left by the filter and check if your expansion valve is covered with frost or dirt. If it is, you have a partial blockage and it should be be replaced. {Please wait, looking for a pic. I believe to have any, but I´m not sure.. -Mike

MikeD: Thanks for the reply. A photo would help if you have one. The shop that did my a/c work said that there was evidence of a compressor going bad at one time becasue of some traces of black stuff in the system. They said there is a possibility of the expansion valve having some trash in it. That could be the next thing to look at. I was just curious of how difficult it would be to get to.

Ok, Sky,

I have only a schematic pic. Not a selfmade pic by myself. Damn, I was so sure to have one. Here a pic what will show you the parts and locations. Notice no. 20 = Evaporator and 23= Expansion Valve. Still searching. -Mike

Thanks for the schematic. So would this be outside the box that covers the evaporator. Could it be accessed by removing the glove box and a few other things? It looks like it follows a line away from the evaporator.

Yes, you can get access to the expansion valve thru the passenger side of the evaporator housing. I replaced mines without removing the dash. You need to remove the blower fan housing and once this is removed you will see an opening where the air from the blower goes into the evaporator box. It is thru this opening that the valve can be seen and removed.

Thanks for the input. I may try changing this to see if it helps any. It has been determined that I have no leaks so maybe this is why my a/c is not cooling as good as it should. I'm tired of spending money on this but I guess I'll see if it works or not.
