Failed Emissions Test!
Hey everyone!
I just had my emissions tested and failed. Everything was fine except my NO. I had 2113 ppm on the 25/25 test. 796 ppm is passing. On the 50/15 test I got 2273 ppm with 879ppm being apassing. I was told it is probably the EGR, which I have not replaced yet. I just wanted to know if any of you have any input before I get dirty. Thanks! Later! Lee |

ok test the egr if it's working. If you have a vacuum pump, then just disconnect the vacuum hose to the the egr and apply vacuum to the diaphram (egr). The engine speed should stumble or it could even die. This is a good sign showing that the egr is working. Now if the idle speed remains the same, it could be that the passages are clogged with carbon (which it could possible be). Clean it out.
Note: If you don't have a vacuum pump, use your fingers to squeeze the diaphram from underneath. Note: Have you checked your pcv valve?

Same happened to me... I failed emissions three times in a row. I had my catalytic converter replaced, PCV valve, EGR valve, and oil change. I failed the No x ppm on the 50/15 test. After my mechanic did all of the above plus other misc. stuff it passed.

You don't need to replace the whole thing, it is probably clogged, just take it apart and clean it out.

sleeprlegendcp: Just follow what i told you to do. This will determine whether or not your EGR valve/passage is clogged. Just to let you know, i had my emissions done today. Pass with flying colors

I failed mine too...my check engine light was on and my egr was clogged. my mechanic knew of that and wat he did was he put a big big a$$ shop fan and let it blow in the front and did the test and I passed.
try that for a quick pass and fix other things later |

Emissions Time for Me
My Acura legend 95 failed emissions. It had miniscule numbers vs. allowable on all tests but NOx where it was like 965 with 780 allowable.
Based on the limited data I can find on the net, this suggests maybe a clogged EGR valve. Does that sound right? Is this something I can remedy with a spray cleaner? Do I have to physically remove the EGR valve ass'y? Where is it? |

You can certainly test the EGR. Before "throwing an EGR" at the problem, you need to remove the EGR - Intake Manifold pipe and check for a blockage. It tends to carbon up at the pipe connection at the intake. It is a major PITA to get to as working space is extremely limited.

I know how you feel. I just recently failed my emissions and I had to get my EGR cleaned to pass.

Same here I failed this year my Nox level was high ..So I removed and cleaned the EGR valve and the line it was blocked up with built up carbon .. after that I passed .. As LegendGS mention that DIY will help follow it ..

Other possible causes for NOX failure?
I too have failed NOX in California. I replaced the Cat, the EGR, cleand the EGR port, and replaced an O2 sensor. I use only 91 Octane fuel from 76 (pro-power) or Chevron (Techron). What other causes could there be for a NOX reading of over 1100ppm?
The guy who performed the test suggested that it was possible that if I had a blown headgasket (I have) that the result of shaving the head and replacing the gasket would cause a smaller headspace and therefor greater compression. This greater compression he said, would cause a hotter burn. As I understand it, a hotter burn is what causes higher NOX. Have any of you heard of this? Has anyone who has blown a headgasket later passed the strict smog tests that California and other states require? Mentok 93 Legend |
