Fuel Guage

1991 Acura Legend 3.2L (4dr base) / 245K miles

Q1: Ive read I have a 18gallon tank, is this true?

Q2: When the fuel guage goes on, approximately, how many more gallons of gas does it contain?

Approx. 3 gallons. I have driven 50 miles after the low fuel light comes on steady.

Yep, my car usually takes about 15 gallons when I fill up, meaning there are three left in there.

This (see trip meter) was the most miles I've ever gone on a tank, and the car took 15.639 gallons to fill up:

EDIT: Jetdoc, I find it ironic that this forum member joined to ask a question about the "reserve" capacity of the tank, and you joined in 2002 to post the exact same question! Kind of cool. Yeah, I was bored and searching through some old threads.

Low fuel light

Low fuel light
i gues this guy was really curius, maybe like me, he ran out of gas today and the gas light never came on. i was actaully waiting for it to come on, usaully it comes on way after i've hit E and then i fill up, but it didn't and my car didn't start afterwork. also i've actaully attemped this in the past, our cars for some reason will drive for a long long time with hardly any gas but as soon as you turn it off and try to start it nothing. I guess i have to stop rely on the gas light since it down work too well, usaully when i hit E i'll fill up less then 14gallons, i've been driving for 4days on E now

I don't think my light works. I've tried to drive it pretty close to E and when I fill up it is around 15-15.5 gallons but my light never comes on.

I have to thank you all for responding to this thread, Im actually quite excited for the info.

NO WAY! Really? 3 more gallons!? Thats cool!

Alperovich.... Ok, honestly, this is my 2nd car, and never ran outa gas. First one was 82 Honda Accord HB, manual trans, 160k, 14years driving it and got about 30mpg.

Ive had my 91 Acura Legend, auto-trans for 12years, 245K. I have the same experience driving it for another 40 odd miles or so after the light goes on, and fill it up for 15gallons. I get about 340miles before refueling at this point. Geez, 3 more gallons, I can use that.

4Cruizn, I see your car is newer, maybe lighter, maybe manual trans? You sure get really good MPG there, not bad.

it's a 6-speed. if you baby it, you can get close to 30MPG (staying at 65MPH or lower in 6th gear). with your auto, you have the potential to get about 26-27 with the AC off at similar speeds.

at 75MPH, i get about 25MPG in my GS Auto which has lower gearing (higher RPMs) than your Type-I sedan

I put octane booster in my car and I get a lot better gas mileage from one tank. But here in Japan we just have plan unleaded, none of that supreme gas, thats why I use octane booster. It also keeps my engine cleaner.

i've ran out of gas alot. it happens when i do not fill the car up with some knowing that its really empty.

as for tyson, he just drives it very carefully and with gas saving in mind. plus its a 6spd (like mine) and if you keep it under 3k always you will get excellent gas mileage. As for it being lighter, its not, i think he gets the best gas mileage out of anyone driving a legend. must be the paper on the floor mats.

Ahh thats hilarious! Nice one! Well, I was so tired with shifting on my Honda here in southern calif, (rushhour is always parking lot central), and although I got good MPG, I had to upgrade to the Legend with all the amenities, including AC! Thats right, electric nothing on my Honda for all them years! So, welllaaa, like my Legend, hate to give it up bc of the mpg (Im sure it takes a hit via the AC).

Wish Acura gets back these nice curves, aerodynamic and sporty style....

idk why but i've never noticed any mpg different with a/c on, while it worked it would get the same mpg as with it off, but now it does work. either a slow leak or the compressor has failed.

also with my durango, the only time i noticed an mpg different with the A/c on, was when i could only run the ac on full (i think if i recall electricalII correctly, its a relay problem) and then it went does like 1mpg, i didn't even notice any change in mpg with 4x4 on.
