Making Legends Rare.....

Fuel Mileage Improvement
Yes, I've done my reading and searching and overall I found a lot of varied responses on each modification, change, etc...
With gas prices already nearing (or at depending on where you are) $3.50 per gallon for Premium and expected to top $4.00 per gallon in the next few months for regular I figured it would be viable to have one thread to post all the Fuel Mileage Improvement modifications we can think of. So, the question is what modifications have you done to your car and found to improve the Fuel Mileage? What modifications do we think could help improve the Fuel Mileage? Overall I would like to keep this to Emissions Controlled modifications, since most of us live where emission testing is now required. I.E. We can't disconnect the smog pump, remove the cat, and probably can't block the EGR without causing us to fail emissions.

Do this in the following order and you should be good.
1.Run gas treatment cleaner in gas tank and seafoam through brake line, then dive long trip. 2.change fuel filter 3.Change Oil (5w 30), remember to warm up the engine then change the oil 4.change pcv valve 5.Charge spark plugs (copper) 6.Install cold air intake w/ K&N 7.Unplug battery for 20 min to reset ECU 8.Over inflate tires a little |

yes u do need a code to get your stereo to work. Just call acura and give them your vin number. Dont let them charge u for it, its suppost to be free. Seafoam cleans the inside of the engine (carbon deposits, etc) while reseting the ecu is something u r suppost to do every season.
You got worse mile probaly because u were driving the car harder, knowing that there is a new air filter in there. |

Resetting the ECU just clears the codes if you have any (check engine light on), the engine usually runs leaner if the CEL is on.
- Changing the oxygen sensors helps too but they're pricey (OEM). - Lighten the load. - Some may recommend to install a grounding kit, but not really worth the time and money. - Clean/replace air filter. Best way to save gas besides buying a new compact is driving properly.

What mileage are you getting now?
One thing I'd suggest is the injector service. Here's the link. Off engine injector service = AMAZING!! I still get 17.5 to 18 in the city which the Legend was rated. And I live up in the hills.

resetting the ECU will clear your fuel trim, which is the ECU adjusting itself based on your driving.
I found in my case, the best improvement in MPG came from installing my new motor. i went from 16-19 to 24+. during my rebuild, some of the things i changed were, spark plugs, fuel filter, cleaned injectors, PCV, cleaned TB, cleaned EGR valve+passage. reused my old O2's thou, I also added headers, and removed all the cat's. plus rebuild the headers and bottom end. which i think may have been the biggest cause, b/c heads will have carbon build up, your rings will not seal as well. although ring seal is not something you can do with out major repair, Seafoam will infact do a good job cleaned your carbon build up. best i saw on the highway almost 29mpg, running a CAI, and full exhaust on a StageIII tuned Sr5guy ecu.

I got this email, a little long, but some info I'd never heard of. I don't know who wrote it
Subj: TIPS ON PUMPING GAS I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are also paying higher, up to $3.50 per gallon. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon.. Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons. Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role. A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps. When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3)stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some other liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money. One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount. Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom. Hope this will help you get the most value for your money. DO SHARE THESE TIPS WITH OTHERS! WHERE TO BUY USA GAS, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW. READ ON Gas rationing in the 80's worked even though we grumbled about it. It might even be good for us! The Saudis are boycotting American goods. We should return the favor. An interesting thought is to boycott their GAS. Every time you fill up the car, you can avoid putting more money into the coffers of Saudi Arabia. Just buy from gas companies that don't import their oil from the Saudis. Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill-up the tank, I am sending my money to people who are trying to kill me, my family, and my friends. I thought it might be interesting for you to know which oil companies are the best to buy gas from and which major companies import Middle Eastern oil. These companies import Middle Eastern oil: Shell........................... 205,742,000 barrels Chevron/Texaco......... 144,332,000 barrels Exxon /Mobil............... 130,082,000 barrels Marathon/Speedway... 117,740,000 barrels Amoco............................62,231,000 barrels Citgo gas is from South America, from a Dictator who hates Americans. If you do the math at $30/barrel, these imports amount to over $18 BILLION! (oil is now $90 - $100 a barrel Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil: Sunoco..................0 barrels Conoco..................0 barrels Sinclair.................0 barrels B P/Phillips............0 barrels Hess.......................0 barrels ARC0....................0 barrels If you go to Sunoco.com, you will get a list of the station locations near you. All of this information is available from the Department of Energy and each is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing.

Well when i first got my car was was getting low 15's and now i get low 19's. there are a number of things i did.
first i did plugs, air filter, fuel filter, and PCV valve - got me about 1 mpg then i got telion chipped - maybe .5 mpg then i got a cold air intake - about 1 mpg then i changed the o2 sensors, this made the biggest difference, probably about 1.5 mpg. and then last week i swapped the intake manifold for the TII manifold and cleaned the egr pipe as well as the injectors. we'll see how it does. im also going to be adding some seafoam through the vacuum and oil before i do an oil change and hopefully that will boost me up a lil too. we'll see |

What he forgot to list here is which companies, such as Sinclair, who use E15 Gas. I was shown by my mechanic just what E15 can do to the inside of a Throttle Body and a Fuel Filter. Also, from personal experience, it lowers MPG. Most of the companies this person listed that don't use Middle East oil sell E15.

E15 ethonol stuff will burn a lot faster than the good old regular stuff like chevron/texaco, or shell. I refuse to fill up at an Arco, because I"ve seen what it does to people's MPG. It might burn a little cleaner, but if thats what your worried about, then there are better options.
Don't get it twisted people, its not like there aren't many older rich Americans with oil intrests
