And dirt is more noticeable on white cars - so clay bar first.

The Porter cable is a very nice machine. It gets the little job done pretty well.

You can definitely use the PC for waxing, and not just polishing. Advantage of using the PC for wax is that your wax layer will be applied more evenly and thinner so you'll waste less wax. Plus it makes buffing easier.

I hardly use my PC anymore because it's slow at removing swirls and the vibration is a serious matter if you're using it too long without some kind of anti-vibration gloves. Since then, I've converted the PC to a wax-only machine. Well that and carpet cleaner

Mine is pretty smooth when I use it. There is more than one counterweight you can use. I know there are at least two, one meant for a 5" pad, and another meant for a 6" pad. I think I've got a 5" pad, with the 6" counterweight. The logic behind this is that a 5" pad loaded with product has additional weight. I was following advice posted on one of the detailing forums. Also keep in mind that there are a number of sources for pads and they are not all the same.
