harsh shift(s)

my boy has an 1995 acura legend GS with 124,000 miles on it. me and him both have noticed, it the either 1st to 2nd gear or 2nd to 3rd gear shift is very firm and hard. whenever girls ride in it, they sometimes comment on it. its shifted like this ever since hes can remember and hes had it for 3-4 years. soo i have 2 questions. does the acura legend start out from dead stop in 1st or 2nd gear? and the main question...is this firm/harsh shifting of gears normal for the legend?
thanks in advance. i know this acura community will be able to answer this question.

btw, i know this is my first post but i've been watching the acura forums off and on for the past month, although i own a lincoln ls.

Yeah, it's quite normal, but if it's been over a year or so since he's changed the tranny fluid, he should probably do that. Just a drain and refill, not a flush. And use Honda ATF only.

Also by this time his tranny mount is probably shot.

Flush the tranny with Honda ATF at least 4 times, and rear tranny mount. It works for me! Don't push the gas too much on the first gear. Go easy...

Keep up on Engine oil change, and spark plugs. After I changed my spark plug, I noticed smoothness.

Legend tranny is a little bit hard on 1 to 2 shift.

if I do a hard acceleration it will most definitely chirp and spin the tires between 1st and 2nd. I don't recall it ever being smooth between 1st and 2nd. I've also seen people commenting around the board that when these cars get on in years, like they pretty much all are, the auto-trans equipped of them shift hard.

Oh, and to answer your other question, from a dead stop, it starts out in 1st gear. You can force the car to start out in 2nd gear by putting it in '2'. Of course this also holds it in 2nd gear, so you'd have to manually upshift. And manually shifting these autos usually isn't recommended.

if its shifting hard from 1st to second its the rear tranny mount, they are weak as hell. also they legend natrually has a hard 1st-2nd shift. add some lucas transmission fluid.

Again, flush the tranny fluid every engine oil for 10K. You should notice the smoothness right away.

Then every 10K miles.

Try giving it a little more gas than normal to get the it above ~1800 or so, then easing up on the pedal a little to make it shift. I think its the really low rpm shifts that give the most severe jerks.

If you search this forum, you'll find that a harsh 1 - 2 shift is VERY common. I don't know that there is an effective fix. I changed my trans fluid and replaced the rear transmission mount. It made no difference.

i just noticed you're car is black on black ting - anyways my friend probably wont get the harsh shift looked at. his car is clicks when shifting from park. he'll prob replace the rear tranny mount throughout the summer. anyone know a rough estimate price of complete rear tranny mount job done by a stealership
