Harsh Vibrations with 6-speed tranny

I have a 94 6-speed coupe and when I start off in 1st gear I get very harsh vibrations only in the point where I am releasing the clutch. I can drive at low speeds and there is nothing, it is only that time when the clutch is being released. Do any of you know what may be the cause of this? Sometimes it is really bad and others not so bad. Once the car gets warmed up it tends not to do it quite as much. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks.

Have you had the clutch replaced (and was the flywheel replaced)? How many miles on your car?

Most likely it is the flywheel. It happened to me about a month after my clutch job last summer. To broke to buy a new one and they could not machine the old one.

Your options are to either replace the flywheel or to live with it. I chose the latter.

Try keeping the RPMs above 2k at launch and DONT let them drop. just make sure you modulate throttle and clutch to keep the RPMS high and you should be fine....its a much cheaper fix.

But if i do that, won't that ruin my clutch much faster? How much does it cost to get it machined? I was kind of thinking that it mich be my flywheel, and I hear that the new ones are pretty expensive.

My car has just over 100,000 miles on it by the way.

Not really. Its not that much of a ride. 3k and up is riding it pretty good. Your clutch may wear a bit faster but my original clutch went 100k miles under the lead foot of two young drivers. 2k is not even that high, its just kinda of a normal launch with a bit more take off power.

Give er a try.

A new flywheel is about $1200 from the dealership. No aftermarket. And it would be hard to say who could machine it....but...you would have to pay labour to get it out and the shop who agreed to machine it could take a look at it and say...."no we cant do it"... (thats what happened to me) and then you are out the $500 in labour.

Its your choice...but I am gonna live with it until my next clutch job, when I will bite the bullet and do it right.
