im was just like you...didnt know if i could do it and i was scared of the timing issue.
So when i took everything off the front of the engine(this is the most time consuming thing) including the plastic covers over the TB, i marked both of my cams where they were. I would mark the cam wiht a scribe and then mark the block behind it....so when i replaced the tb, i made sure that both cams were at the scribed lines...worked for me... You will not damage your engine with bad timing...it will either not start...very sluggish performance...or idle rough....but at that point if you cant get it right you can always pay a mechanic to time it for you....that was my plan and i did not have to use a mechanic.... By the way i replaced everything(thermostat, TB, wP, tensioner...and all the belts at the front of the engine) Another thing I did while the car was not up and running, I took the injecotrs out and sent them to get cleaned and mached, it cost 100 but it was the best $100 I spent on my legend. I also changed the plugs and engine fluids. Another thing if you do it yourself save all your receipts and make sure you take pictures of you doing the work so you have the maintenence documented in case you sell the car. |

you might be in the early stages of a BHG where the headgaskit is "seeping" The car will drive fine and not smoke BUT...... your temp will occationaly fulctuate, you will keep getting air into your cooling system, you might find a little oil in your coolent, the hose inside your overflow tank might be bloated, if you floor the car for an extended period of time coolent might overflow out of your overflow tank, and you occationaly have to fill your radiator with a little coolent once and a while. These are some of the symptoms of a seeping headgaskit.
