Do I need the whole kit? Is it possible to just replace the head gaskets only?

It's best to get the whole kit. When doing the HG's the TB/WP and tensioner should be replaced. The dome cover gaskets and spark plug tube gaskets also. The intake manifold should be taken apart and cleaned a long with the EGR tube.

The HG's need to be OEM or Fel-pro. The other gaskets can be found on EBay for less than 80.00 shipped.

As stated by Bigboy, if doing the HG's take the opportunity to install new gaskets everywhere else you can. At this stage of the game, some of the existing gaskets are not going to survive the disassembly process, not to mention you might get problems down the road.
In addition to OEM from the dealer or FelPro you can look for Stone gaskets. They are really Ishino, the same OEM gaskets in most Japanese cars. I got a good deal on those from Pelham Auto Parts.

I also forgot to mention replae all coolant hoses. It would also be the best time to do vaccumm hoses as well. The last thing you want to do is spring a leak and destroy all the work you are doing.

I have never done a HG job, I did however replace all my coolant hoses. I will be doing all the upper gaskets and cleaning the IM and EGR system when it gets warmer. (might even do a 3.5 swap)
