This is an option I would LOVE to install in my Legend, i'm trying to put together a 'cold weather package.' lol Heated wipers, I still haven't gotten around to heated seats, but my question is..... I don't see why not, but could the circuitry that's in place for remote radio control be adapted as a circuit for a heated steering wheel element?

Thats a good question...although I don't know the answer I'm sure it'd be possible with a little time and money spent...Not sure if it'd be worth the price it costs though...Maybe if it was available in new model cars then it would fall into the sticker price but having it done to an older car would probably be pricey, if its even possible that is..

man, I was just thinking about a heated steering wheel! And seats... that leather gets cold. If you are good with electronics and stuff, maybe a trip to the junkyard for a heated seat out of a volvo might lead you somewhere to getting the project started?

heh, i love heated seats.
what you could do, find a manufacturer that puts them in their cars, and possibly with a little bit of sweet talking you can get some info out of them on how to go about on this project. Delphi apparantly offers one, maybe give them a call.... |

I'm trying to get a set of OEM seat heat elements and the controller, which IF ANYONE HAS THIS SETUP FOR SALE, PM ME. lol I have an LS, but I think the '91 is one year too early for this option. I'm constantly coming up with mod ideas, but cashflow only allows for about 5% of them to see the light. I'm thinking about buying a leather steering wheel cover, gutting out the padding in it, and somehow incorporating a heated element from something that allows flex and pressure, like an electric sock or blanket. I just gotta find something that will adapt a 12V system. Actually intergrating an element into the OEM steering wheel wrap with an element from a late model car would be extremely expensive. I think a cheaper but still very decent looking alternative can be made, and can be taken off for the summer. I don't want heated ANYTHING during the 95 degree July days, climbing into a black-leather car. lol
But when it's o-dark:30 in the morning and the wheel is literally 0 degrees in temperature, anything would suffice. Well, i'm going to be starting in on this next weekend. Any other ideas would be great, otherwise i'll post back with what i've come up with. |

Wire management will be a challange as the steering wheel is constantly turning. That is why if you are not using your stereo controls, you might be able to feed 12V into the one wire and ground the other (put a switch somewhere in the path) however I do not know if those wires are thick enough for this application. You might end up heating up the wires instead of the element.
As for cooled seats, I rented a recent model Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer Edition and it had cooled seats. It actually blew cold A/C air through the perferated holes on the leather seats! I'm sure it's a standard option on the Navigator too. G
