I need info/help/suggestions for a big problem with my 1993 automatic sedan, 173K miles.
Last week, driving home on the freeway in typical stop-n-go SoCal freeway traffic, the first sign was the battery charging indicator turning red on the dash, then this rubber burning smell for a few minutes, but the light stayed red on the drive home - no stalling. The car started up fine the next morning, but now the ABS yellow light is lit too. Dealer diagnosis: broken crankshaft pulley not engaging the alternator belt so the alternator can't charge the battery. The rubber smell was most likely from the alternator belt. Since the labor is the same as the TB service (done at 90K for 925 in 1998 and due soon at 180K in a few months), I'm getting a new crankshaft pulley (284 part) and the TB stuff done now for a grand total of ~1200!!! Ouch. And no Legend for a week . I don't drive my Legend that hard, though speed is a temptation . So I have no idea how/why?? the crankshaft pulley broke and the service advisor couldn't offer any ideas - 15 years with Acura (11 as a tech) and he's only heard of 1 other Legend with a broken crankshaft pulley problem. Thanks for your feedback! |

You do not have to remove the timing belt to remove the crank pulley. To remove and replace the crank pulley should only take you an hour. Remove the belts, remove the crank bolt with a breaker bar, remove the pulley, install the new pulley, and reinstall the belts. That's it. This should only cost you about $100 in labor. Don't get ripped off.
ASP racing has a underdrive crank pulley for $99.

nothing so far, I took it off my other coupe. You can get a used pulley for about $50. $100 for a new lightweight ASP pulley.

Was your recipent or donor car stick shift? It seems there is a difference between the crankshaft pulleys for stick shift and automatic cars stick shfit pulleys being 2 times more expensive. I wonder what the differences are and if automatic pulley would fit my car.
