Hey Y'all bought me a Legend Yesterday!

Hey I am the proud new owner of a 94 Legend!

I bought it to be used as a project car.

It needs:

New HG
New water pump
New Radiator
New Timing belt (prob other belts to)

So I am interested in your opinions on a couple things....

I'm going to need to pull the engine and get the heads re-machined as well as check on a few other things... This is my first project car, I am an Engineering student and have been interested in cars, done some work on them here and there but nothing this serious. Yay for a learning experience...

Should I just look to replace everything OEM? Or while I am at it should I go for some upgrades (re-bore, performance heads ect....).

I already have another car that I love and am going to keep, and I don't really need a second (as said before this is my summer project) but with all this work is it going to be worth my time and money to try to resell it when I am done? Or should I try to keep it? I have plenty of capital and paid cash for it, so money really isn't to much of an issue... but who doesn't like to make some extra money......

I am really interested in your opinions thanks in advance....

Since you're looking for a project, you might want to research what people have done with the RL 3.5L motor...

It all depends on what you're looking for when you're done

Welcome to the forum!

Here are the only pic I have so far. Finals are the next two days for me but I am going to try to take pictures regularly of my progress and I'll try to post them often...

There was less than an inch of clearance on the trailer....

Nice car, and its tinted already. I'd say throw some wheels on it first to bring out the sexy! That is after you finish the HG maintenance.

That looks familiar. Did you by chance by this off of Denver Craigslist from a seller in Lakewood for around $1200?

nice ride; if your looking for performance mods, watch the engine & perf. forum threads; if you want body styling then visit ebay motors and andy's auto sport; remember on choosing wheels & tires make sure offset is 42mm or higher, if less you will need to roll fenders; and by the way keep your ride, and welcome to the forum.

actually yeah, it was from Lakewood, my best friend was selling it and was going to settle for $600 so I told him for that much I'd take it and make it my summer project. I have found some GREAT BHG DIY, I'm excited!

Great. I have a BHG 94 L Coupe on it's way - should be here on Friday. I'm probably just going to do the 3.5L swap. The DIYs on here are great.

Cool. I actually emailed your friend about it but got no response. On the ad there was no mention of BHG so glad I didn't buy it.

Good luck.

Shit, if you're gonna pull the motor, you might as well put in something worthwhile ie, a RL 3.5 Since you're an engineering major, you would probably embrace the challenge. Check out this thread and this thread.

PS, you might want to crop that pic a bit.

Chris, my old autobody instructor would have a tear in his eye....you reporting money being no object. He frequently used to state: "With enough time and money, we can take your left door handle and build a new car around it."

The Legend is an old car and not a rare one. Neither was it designed to be a performance vehicle. I believe you will be spending enough cash just to replace/repair what you have listed as well as other parts (suspension, brake, exhaust) which have reached or exceeded their service life. You will have much, much more invested in the car than what it is worth.

The car, not being designed as a performance vehicle, has no aftermarket performance parts. I suppose you could bore the block to the limit, change piston configuration, and have some head work performed.

Just a suggestion based upon many years of owning and wrenching muscle cars -- if you want to refurbish a car buy one in which you have some chance of breaking even, be it a Domestic, European or Asian car. If you are going to spend serious money (my BMW dealer neighbor likes to use the term 'large numbers') buy a car which is relatively rare and has a performance heritage. Otherwise, just bundle up some cash and FedEx it to me, or drive through town tossing $10 bills out of the window.
