Illegal Bulb colors?
I saw some really nice yellow bulbs the other day on 480 here in cleveland, it was daytime yet they were bright, not blinding, but bright. They were actually on a ITR behind me as i drove to work.
My question is: are any colors of bulbs illegal for street use? I did a mini search and didnt find anything much so if theres a topic on this already forgive me. I hear that in japan they use the yellow bulbs for all kinds of terrible weather. |

I think it depends on the State. Here in Cali., they'll pull you over for having any color cause they think it distracts other drivers. But like I said, I think it depends on the State.

I have seen fog lights this color (yellow) but I have also seen some outrageously blue lights.
IMO the yellow ones aren't as bad being that fog lights are the same color. Its the greens, and deep violets that I really wonder about. The jury is still out but I think I am leaning towards to yellow bulbs. Something different, and for the safety factor, I might do it. |

I'm assuming we're talking about headlights when you say Illegal Bulb Colors. The law will very from state to state. So will the allowable colors for turn signals.
In cali; the front have to be white in the headlamp assembly. If it stands out, you're probably going to get pulled over. For front turn signals, if i recall correctly white or yellow can be used here. For rear turn signals Red or Yellow. Reflectors must remain present in rear lamps or somewhere on the bumper... Yellow: Are you sure he wasn't running with some fog lamps on? @ HIDs. Personally, the only HIDs that have ever bothered me while driving are COLORED HIDs. That are no longer white, darker blues, any shade of purple, and such are distracting and tend to mess with my vision. Projectors are the best way to use HIDs as it is originally meant to be used, however even OEM projectors can hurt my eyes from time to time depending on which new car it is on. Usually those are 4300k? and the projector housing gives them that super bright white/touch of blue look. Aftermarket HIDs ~6000k , those are usually used in stock headlamp assemblies to give that super white and touch of blue effect since the stock headlamp assemblies on older cars have no projector. It's the only way to get a similar color / effect: The downside, the light refracts in more directions, if you can point your headlamps down, it helps a lot. Over 6000k HIDs are like colored bulbs... and will stand out a lot more.

From what I've been told (by a cop in Cincinnati)... white in back is a no go (when in drive), and so is red in the front. Those are the definites. I know it doesn't really apply here, but I was also told that strobing or oscillating lights are also not allowed. Your best bet is to find a cop that's cool and ask em. It all boils down to how froggy the cop feels, and if they want to pull you over.

Yellow: Are you sure he wasn't running with some fog lamps on?
Nah i am def they were his reg lights. he rolled up on me quick and tailgaited me for a sec, as if he were trying to get me to notice them, then he quick jumped into the right lane, accelerated, and i caught a glimpse of the ITR badge. i will have to ask a cop. i found the light i am THINKING he could have used: (Nokya 2300k yellow bulbs?) |

i was told cali vehicle code says: headlights must be white or yellow, front turnsgnals must be white yellow or amber and must have a reflector, the rears are the standard red for brake lights and must include a reflector, turnsignals must be yellow or amber, the only white light allowed in the rear is the lic plate light. absolutely no reds or blues of any kind because they would get mistaken for emergency vehicles. check with your local enforcement as laws tend to be different in different states.
