Im About tired of this car...

I'll try to give you guys as much details of what happened noises fluids ect
see if you can tell me whats wrong this time.

I was doing about 60 cruising down the way and I had to accelerate and when I did it down shifted into third...

then not a milisecond later theres a clump from under the legend then(engine free revs)

I coast to the side of the road, completely stop and put the car in park thats when I hear(a gear grinding still rotating, the car is still on so I put in neutral and turn the car off... then put it back into park, gear grinds to a stop.)

So I get out and jack up the car but I wasn't able to see anything because its dark and I don't have my fashlight. but I do see a fluid on the ground, so I put the car in neutral and push it backwards. the fluid didn't look like tranny fluid, and didn't smell like it either, it was brown looking almost like oil but it didn't smell like oil either.

the car was able to start and idle and seemed fine, but when put into drive it just revs.

so Im thinking either tranny, or differential what do you guys think?
I probably won't be back on for a couple of hours because I have to get it the towed back to houston

gotta go. Yea so im back cause I left and didn't fully post this... Im so pissed right now Its not even funny. remember i got my car out of the shop not a full 3 weeks ago. and it seems im towing this bitch around more than im driving it. either way im taking it back to the bastard that put my new flywheel on because I suspect he forgot to hook somthing up.
uh yeah remind me why I like this car?

Edit: just remembered im supose to be starting a new job tuesday... how the hell am I supose to get there... Got Dammit.

Honestly I am not sure what to tell you except I wouldn't be taking it back to the same shop.

It "sounds" like it is potentially the differential, not the transmission, but I wouldn't be sure about that.

Have you checked your tranny fluid recently? If it isn't changed and flushed regularly it can turn brown (i.e. burnt).

tranny fluid was changed when they pulled it to replace my broken flex plate.

Then I would suspect differential as that fluid is a brown color. Sounds like you dropped it completely from what you said.

The extension shaft that transfers power to the diff could have backed out of the trans if they didn't reinstall the sealing bolt properly. Or the splines on the extension shaft could have stripped out inside the trans, I've seen that quite a few times. If that were the case, you'd be looking at replacing the trans. (Cheaper to get a used one than disassemble and fix it honestly).

Since you mentioned seeing fluid on the ground, the extension shaft may have backed out of the trans and disengaged from the diff, that could allow some fluid to seep out.

sounds about right... I average about $400 a month on this heap anyway... why not throw a 6 speed in there so somthing else can go wrong... lol

thanks kenso, your info always seems pretty dead on. its probably either or. I hope its the first so this bastard fixes it for $-175 cause I had to tow it.

Yeah, Legends are expensive to keep up at times, no doubt. Maybe you'll get lucky, if the extension shaft just backed out of the trans it would be an easy fix. No telling without looking at it though.

This happend to me about a year ago now. I was on the way to Las Vegas and my Legend broke down on me in Baker. I had it towed back home and had a mechanic look at it...Turns out it was my differential...Transmission was still good...It cost me $800 bucks for a used differential including labor to put on.

Ever since I have been careful with making sure the fluids are topped off. Also, it doesnt seem to drive the same ever since...As far as the way it shifts. I just had the transmission fluid changed out with Honda fluid and it did make a difference but there is still something to it...Maybe the differential fluid needs to be changed...Any ideas on what it could be?

Maybe... I Hadn't serviced my axles and my cv boots were torn last time I checked But I packed and taped them up... when I find out Ill let you guys know for sure.

and the big clump was the U joint breaking and backing out...

let me ask this question. what would cause this to happen? Under a downshift/

Seems to me like there's a good posibility you can pin this on the person who recently replaced your flywheel...

Brown fluid that's slightly thicker then oil but not so thick as to be grease with a terribly pungent odor (ie. shit stinks!) is likely diff fluid - just for reference.

Good luck!
