Interior upgrades: new carpet, or......?

The past few weeks I've been slowly Raammatting the interior of the car. I had already done the trunk a few months ago, but I've been driving around with a gutted car for the past 4 weeks. I put 2 layers of Raammat on pretty much everything except the door panels, roof, and rear deck. I plan on doing the doors/roof in about a week, and the deck after I build the box. I was worried about the weight b/c of the deadener, each box weighs 25 lbs, and I've already calculated I'll be using 2.5 boxes.

The next the step was the carpet. Since it was out, I decided to go ahead and replace it. I purchased new carpet from another member, and I was going to install it, but in my quest for a deadened interior, I decided to reuse the stock carpet. The reason is b/c Acura rubberizes the back of their carpet so that it fits every nook and cranny of the floor pan, unlike the aftermarket makers that only use the insulation glued to the back of the carpet where one's feet would lie. So word of advice, don't buy aftermarket unless you have to. Since I was using the old carpet, that means I would have to dye it. It looked like this:

I was reading up on the dyeing thread, but I don't have the room for a kiddie pool full of dye. I read about fabric/viynl dye from Duplicolor and VHT, and found some Duplicolor Gloss Black @ Autozone up the street for $7.95, so I picked up 2 cans. I cleaned the carpet thoroughly with Tide, then w/the water hose, then cleaned again with Simple Green and rinsed again. I let it dry 2 days and vacuumed it 3x before I started using the dye. I was a bit reluctant to try it, b/c I admit I thought it was going to be crap, but the pics tell it all. I sprayed half and left the other half unsprayed.

It dries almost instantly, and you'll need 3 cans to cover the entire carpet, as I finished 3/4 of the carpet w/2 cans. The carpet doesn't feel sticky, it feels like it did before I sprayed it. The only bad part is that is smells like spray paint, so I wouldn't recommend doing this inside the car. I'm going to pick up another can tomorrow, spray and let it dry overnight, then Scotchguard it Friday. It should be back in by Saturday.

I know what you mean about keeping the carpet for the dampning reason and that thick padding on the carpet. I am also in the procress of laying sound dampner also. I'm using second skin, but I know Raammat has the closed cell foam mat that you lay on top of the sound deadner. with 27sq. ft. you could enough material for the floors, rear seat area, and rear speaker deck.

I'm actually surprised to see you adding all this extra weight to your car, since you seem to be speed hungry like some of the other members. another idea that won't apply to you now since your already dying your carpet is to cut that foam out from the OEM carpet and lay that foam then lay your new carpet on top of the OEM foam.

Yeah, I had mentioned in my original post I was concerned about the weight. Each box weighs 26 lbs, so 2.5 boxes should add 63 lbs, plus the closed cell foam for the doors should be another 5 lbs, so I'm looking at total of 68 lbs. Since I put c/f hood on, I figure I'm saving about 35-40 lbs, plus I have a Greddy exhaust, and compared w/the stock muffler, I figure 15-20 lbs, so at best, I'm +8 lbs, at worse + 18 lbs. Applying that old rule of every 100 lbs equating to .1 in the 1/4, I think I'm doing all right.

And I thought about cutting out the foam, but with the stereo upgrades in the works, I'd like to have the car as "dead" as possible. And yes, I am speed hungry, but this is a luxury car, and I'm not going to sacrifice the "luxury" part for speed. Otherwise the p/s and a/c would be gone.

hey I totally hear you, I wouldn't sacrifice any luxury either. I'm putting around 160 sq. ft. of second skin damplifier pro. w/ the overkill closed cell foam (36 sq. ft.). total of 4 boxes of 40 sq. ft. each box. So I'm adding well over 80lbs. to my car. The Damplifier is quiet a bit more heavy than raammat. I'm quiet impressed with the closed cell foam it is about as thick as the oem foam on the carpet. As far as speed it isn't a big concern for me even though. For speed I just like to know that if I step on the gas my car is gonna go. Overall goal for me is to get the ride inside as quiet as possible mostly to tone down most of the stromung exhaust, as you have also, and definitely enjoy my stereo upgrade. on that note I'll share some of my progress on my sedan with you.

Here was an OH SHIT moment for me!! I completely didn't think about the sunroof assembly. I thought I was just gonna remove the headliner and real quick put 2-3 layers and be done with the roof until I saw the it. It was extremely easy to remove, but invite a friend to help you cause it is a PITA by yourself.

Did you do research before going out and buying Raammat? I actually got samples of fatman, brown break, second skin, raammat, and have used dynomat on previous cars I've own. I must say that Butyl (sp?) material that raammat and damplifier is made out of is awesome. Those other sound deadners that are made out of asphalt were terrible IMO. With this stuff you can lay it down and if you mess up you can take it off again and re-lay it down. Try doing that shit with Dynomat?!?

EDIT: I hope this isn't . I just wanted to share with you some of my experience since I'm working on the same project.

Hey, I'm laying new....old.......carpet in the spring. (Decided I'm not storing her this winter.) I was checking out this thread, with great intrest. How much is a box of Raamat? And how much do I need to cover my floor and trunk? Can you tell me, without to much thinking? Thanks in advance! And I love the way your carpet turned out. I was going to leave mine, since it looks really good, but it's gray, NOT, black. I'm gonna use that shit you used!

Raam, comes in rolls of 63 sq. ft per roll about $120 per roll I think it is cheaper per roll if you buy more than 1 roll. Let's see with 40 sq. ft. I was able to put 1 layer on the floors and the rear seats. So I would guess that 63 sq. ft. will probably cover your floors and trunk 1 layer. I would recommend that you do 2 layers or one layer of a thicker product.

here is two of the best products IMO

*lol*, just kidding.

Yeppers, I researched....a lot. I visited 3 or 4 audio specific forums, plus our audio forum. Everyone had such good things to say, so I bought a box (rather, hinted hard and got one last Christmas ). Each box is about $130-$140 shipped. I ran out of 1 box after getting 1 layer on the trunk, decklid, and floorpan. So I got another to finish the 2nd layer.

I saw the cell foam about a week ago, so when I place my last order, I will pick some of that up, too.

And you're right, the butyl is the -ish. I'll also be deadening a bunch of the panels. But I'm toying w/the idea of revinyling all the grey parts of the interior in black, so those will probably done at the same time.

Now being that you have mentioned that it has not even been a year since you applied the Dupilcolor paint to you carpet that is has begun to fade, I was wondering what you take is on black liquid waterproof ink? I found a jar of this stuff in my basement and I think there is a good chance this stuff might work, and hopefully that I wont have to worry about fading.

Hmmmmmm....interesting. Only thing that I can possibly see negatively is that it might come out looking navy, navy blue. I've seen black ink look like that when it gets on clothing......

Man, the stuff you find in a basement *lol*....

I did a test patch last night and so far it is darker than the duplicolor. I will check it out once I get home to see how it dried.
