JDM KA8/E55 bixenon nearing completion

For some history, read these threads:

JDM E55 Retrofit teasers

JDM/E55 retrofit sneak peek

Here, Fut.....

It's been almost 1.5 years since I've started working on these, but I've kinda been occupied working on other things, so they've taken a back seat. Periodically I would look at them, but my main issue is that I want these to look "finished" and not have an open face. That caused a major issue, b/c the light housing wouldn't mount like I wanted in the light reflector from the old bulb assembly (pictured below):

I decided a few months ago that I'd like to get these done before daylight savings time this year, so I've been paying a lot more attention to them. After working on a couple iterations, I decided that the best way to do this would be to mount them straight to the plastic housing. So I talked to my machinist and explained that I wanted a bracket made, and showed him a rough cut of what I wanted. So he whipped out these for me (sorry for the pic, camera's on the fritz, but I borrowed the work cam, so the rest of the pics are better):

Aluminum brackets. Mounted on the lights, they look like this:

With the help of some washers between the brackets and the housing:

These brackets allowed me to be very precise about this. I'll write up a DIY on the second one after I finish this one. Just have to fabricate another c/f face plate and a piece of aluminum to separate the E55s from the driving light chamber.

So sorry, everyone, I'll be working on getting these complete (this week) before I resume work on the carPC.

Wow - I like that solution. How open to making more brackets will your boy be and how much did they cost ya?

Not that I'm going to be doing this anytime soon... but that's definitely how I'd want to build mine if I did. I'd have a lot more confidence that I could get the silly things level and looking good with that approach.

$100 for all the brackets, including the allen bolts and nuts to mount the lights to them. Kinda pricey, but I take him a lot of work, so for these I didn't pay quite that.

So utilizing those brackets eliminates the ability to re-aim the projectors once they are in correct? Because the brackets mount the projectors straight to the headlight housing which doesn't contain any re-aim capabilities. The re-aim hardware is attached to the reflector which is eliminated correct? Thanks! I may just this method for my next retrofit.

Correct. I cut large holes into the housing, and use big washers on either side of the housing to give me left right aiming capability. Since the brackets are 90 degree angles, they aim them straight up and down, so you don't have to worry about that.

That's an extremely good idea! But, since the interior plastic housing also has a flat top and bottom, why couldn't you just make the brackets slightly shorter so you could mount the 90 degree brackets to the top and bottom of the inner "chrome" plastic housing, rather than the outer housing? This would have eliminated the possibility of having your rotation off but still left you with the ability to aim them up/down/left/right.

I can't wait until these are done

The brackets are as short as you can get. You can't use them with "chrome" housing b/c the way the chrome housing is shaped. They indent on the inside, so these won't fit.

Trust me, I've had a year and a half to think about this *lol*
