key won't turn

Hello all,

I just replaced my ignition switch, but during the replacement I had to cutoff some wires that were soldered to the previous ignition switch's wires. I guess these wires that I had snipped were for my remote car starter.

Now that the new ignition switch has returned it back to its factory setup, my key does not turn.

I tried powdered graphite. Also, turning the steering wheel and then trying to start it. Still no luck.

fyi: When I take out the ignition switch, the key can turn.

Could there be a security feature that is happening?

Working with bad igntion switch

I got a new ignition switch installed when a locksmith told me mine was locked up about 4 years ago. Seems like they charged like 265.00 bucks to install. It was hard to find someone to fix it , and the dealer would send them out for repair. About six months ago, it locked up again and wouldn't turn. I got it to start but it wouldn't release key, so I drove it to the locksmith, and the guy there said these have 'pot metal' in the back of the cylinder that dents in slightly over a period of time so the key stops working when inserted. He said he adjusted the cut of the key pattern forward so it would work for quite a while to keep from getting another new lock cylinder. It stuck several times, and he had to take it back out of there and said there was a spring towards the back that would fall over and have to be placed back in correct position or ignition wouldn't work. I don't know, it might be worth taking it to a locksmith by AAA tow truck if you have that or call them to come out. The lock mechanism on these is tricky, and lots of dealers don't even fool with them. Good Luck.

key now turns

Thanks for replying Josh.

I had to line up the female part of the ignition switch with the metal key, which is located at the back of the ignition column) -- my rookie mistake.
