Kickback/clunk when letting off gas

I just replaced the front engine mounts and rear tranny mount with poly'd ones...which helped the overall feel of the car and 1st to 2nd shift quite a bit. But there is still this noticeable "kickback" that I feel when suddenly letting off the gas, or braking relatively strongly, as though something is still moving around down there, sliding forward or whatnot. A certain "clunk" that happens. The mechanic said that my mid-engine mounts were still good. Anyone else have this? Ideas as to what this could be and if it's repairable?
