I just replaced all four rotors and pads. I used Brembo blanks and Akebono pads. Everything went smoothly, and the brakes seem to be working. But after driving for a little bit, the brakes started making a repeating knocking or clunking sound under firm braking, like when the car is slowing down to a stop from 30-40 MPH. The knocking sound slows down as the car slows. The noise doesn't happen when I'm braking lightly. It sounds like the noise is coming from the front passenger side of the car.
After doing some searching on this issue, I took everything apart and inspected the installation. The caliper and bracket bolts are all tight, the brake lines are fine, and the shims are well greased, etc.
I took the car to my mechanic to see if he could figure it out. He suspected that the pads may be bad, because he said that they were moving around slightly in the bracket. I exchanged the front pads for a new set and swapped them out. It sounded like the sound was gone, but today it came back. The mechanic also replaced the passenger side axle and CV boot, because the boot was cracked and leaking.
So it's not the pads, unless I got two sets of defective pads. Everything is tight and greased up. It's not the CV boot/axle, unless the new one is making the exact same sound as the old one. The sound wasn't there before I changed the brakes. If this is unrelated, it's a huge coincidence. Any ideas???
the only common denominator here is the rotors. you've changed everything else (pads and axle). swap the rotors from one side to the other and see if the noise moves to the left side.
I had the same thought, so today I pulled the ABS fuses (ALB in the fuse box) and took it out for a test drive. The ABS light was on, and the sound was still there, so it's probably not ABS. I'll find some time to swap the rotors... but this noise doesn't sound like warped rotors, and I'm not getting any feedback in the steering wheel.
i'm not expecting them to be warped, but aftermarket parts, even those from reputable companies, are made to different tolerances than OE parts. the more i think about your problem, the more i wonder if my rotors are the cause of the knocking i have (just got this car a few months ago).
Ari and other members have far more experience with these cars than i, but, for the most part, brakes are brakes. like any other car, Legends have their quirks. don't rule out the ABS just yet.
something else i thought of- when you put the pads in, did you have to push the pistons in? was the brake fluid low? what condition is the fluid in and how long has it been since it was changed or bled?

Yeah, I had to push the pistons back in. I used the old brake pad to push against the piston, and a c-clamp. The brake fluid is/was not low. The fluid looks fine to me, though I did not bleed it this time. I'd have to look at my records to see when that was done last.
Check the brake pads hardware, for the clips sometimes become loose allowing the pads to move making loud noises. You can also try to put silicone sealant on the pads, at the edges and on the sides where the caliper sets pressure. The idea is for the silicone to dampen any movement. Also, make sure the rotors are in good order and do not need rectification.
Else, it might just be some suspension part that makes the noise due to the forces caused by the braking action. At this time there is plenty of worn-out rubber in our drive trains.

Yup, I checked everything and had the mechanic check them too. He thought the pads were too small and were moving around, so I replaced those with another new set. For now, it looks like the sound is gone, but I'm not sure if it will come back.

First I would like to say, I have been debating whether or not I should open an account here on Acura-Legend.Com; I've learned alot from this site through simply being a visitor. As soon as I seen this thread I made up my mind to register. I too am having the same problem.
For me, it started after I got all four of my 92 Legend's tires replaced at my local Sam's Club. As you said, the knocking/clicking noise, which does sound like it's coming from the passenger side dashboard area (more specifically the far right air vent?), happens when I brake from a higher speed (30-40 mph). The noise reminds me of a typewriter/tapping noise and it sounds as if something is being scanned or is going through a cycle?
I've been researching what this could be but kept finding myself at threads where people state that when driving their Legends they hear a noise when turning yet I don't get a noise when I turn or change direction, just when braking. I can say that the noise for me stopped when the ABS light came on; no more knocking/clicking noise (SN: I pulled codes from my OBD and got ABS problems codes 1-8 and 2-1). When that happened though, I had a previous mechanic change the brake pads and clean the brake calipers to which the ABS light went off but the noise unfortunately came back.
When the problem first started I would get the noise but also the brake pedal would thump under my foot when pressed down. It would be great to find what is the culprit exactly and get it fixed.
