Hey folks, how are you guys n gals doing out there (hopefully fine and if not hope ya feel better soon) Now we have that out the way. My 91 Legend is smoking like a chain smoker at a convention
when i sit idle for a few minutes. Now I have heard it could be my valve stems or seals or it could be my piston rings. Now i know they both can be very pricey to get fixed. I was wondering would using "Lucas" instead of conventional motor oil by me some time from getting this major work done. One mechanic reccomend that i just use 5 qt of Lucas and call it a day and just chane the oil more frequently. Any comments or suggestion? For those whom are unfamillar with lucas heres there site. http://www.lucasoil.com/products/dis...tid=2&loc=show |

If you're having major seal problems within your motor diagnosed by heavy smoke there is little that a different oil will do. Diagnosing the problem will probably require at least pulling the heads off the block.

Personally I have not used Lucas oil, nor do I plan to, or any other so-called
cure all oils. I use the cheapest motor oil that I can buy that meets the car manufactors recomendations. At times NAPA has oil specials and sells a quart for $ 1.09. I stock up by the case. The NAPA oil is bottled by Ashland oil, which is also the manufactor of Havoline motor oil. That being said, you did not state how many miles your car has. If the smoke coming out the tailpipe is blueish, that would be oil burning. If so, more than likely the valve stem seals are worn. To change the seals is not a major, major job and can be done without taking the engine apart. Requires some mechanical know how however. To have some idea about the piston rings you can do a compression test or a leak down test of the engine and if you find that the compression is low then the engine is worn more than likely. If the car is in otherwise good condition you could replace it with a new secondhand engine or even a brand spanking new engine, for $$$$$$. Both of those procedures have been much discussed on these boards, search. RAP

switch to valvoline maxlife and see how that helps out with yours. that helped out a lot with mines.. you could also pour some trans fluid right before you change your oil just to clean it out some. .. and see if you pcv valve needs to be changed.

i wouldnt use valvoline max life read up reivews on forums before u use that. i would stick with castrol. i try not to cheap out on oil, even if u were to get a jug for 30 bucks(yea right) its still a fraction of the cost u pay for any repair. hell a tank of gas costs more. stick with good named brands for oil.
also check the product review section ivan did a review for lucas stab. he was pretty impressed with it, i wouldnt use it personally. just use high mileage oil, thats what i am switching to |

whoa, i just read dude's post closely... he said totally substitute Motor Oil for Lucas?! NOOOO NO NO NO NO. It's called an oil stabilizer because it stabilizes OIL...not used as oil. ![]() never run 100% lucas. it's optimal mixture is 1 part lucas for ever 4 parts oil or out of 5parts 20% is Lucas. so 3.5-4 quarts of oil and 3/4 quarts lucas will be fine. Lucas Oil Stabilizer/Mobil 1 0W 40 and just for the record. i was just like all of you...that lucas cure all...what the hell is that and point blank...why is it still around...its just snake oil. but when i saw what it did, i have to say, i was impressed ![]() 251,900 miles and no smoke unless the car sits for like 45 minutes and then i get like a poof of smoke for maybe 10-15 seconds, then it's fine. didn't cure the leak, but it's one hell of a band-aid until i rebuild the engine. |
