Miss my G1 Coupe

In the last 30 days I sold my '87 Coupe L with 265K miles, bought a '93 black 6-speed coupe and a '94 black/black sedan L for the wife. A lot of automotive changes!

I am loving my 6-speeder and her pimped sedan, but I miss that dang G1 coupe. Fun to drive - even in the automatic. As I hopped in the 6-speeder in the cold this morning, I lamented a few things...

- Why is the heating/fan so much slower and less powerful in the G2?! Both of our G2's are weak and take 5-10 minutes before there is any hot air. The G1 heats up much faster and has a much more powerful heater blower motor. This is one of several areas I was expecting not a LOSS in performance 6-7 years later and a new design.

- This is car geeky, I know, but I miss the brain in my '87. The computer would alert me if low coolant, low oil, low wiper fluid, when it needed an oil change, major service, MPG, etc... not idiot lights but text messages. Surprised that again, 6-7 years later, the same car - a Legend L - doesn't have any of these features.

- Visibility. While the G2 really isn't too bad visibility-wise, the G1 really excels in this area.. it is so easy to see a 360 degree view... the G2 (coupe moreso than sedan) has some big blind spots. Not a biggie but another annoyance this morning while thinking about all the things I miss.

- Reliablily. This HG thing is scaring the crap out of me... no such issue with G1's.

I like the style and power of the G2's better though and they are newer... hence the recent upgrades to G2 machines. Anybody else go through Legend generation withdrawal or miss something else about the G1?

Uhmm yeah, same withdrawals so I decided to keep my 90 LS Coupe. Just wasn't worth selling. Never will recoup any of the $ sank in & I find that the G1s are easier to DIY most repairs vs my G2.

That is why my fiance drives my 89 coupe now and I got the 6 speed.

My guess in why it takes longer to heat the G2 than the G1 is due to the size of the engine block and amount of coolant capacity. In the NSX, it can take 5 minutes or longer for the temp to reach its normal level. Part of that is because the NSX has more coolant capacity since the radiator is up front and the engine is in the rear. All that extra piping I makes for a longer return to the engine after the radiator and also added capacity. My point is the G2 engine is also larger and I think holds more coolant, thus it takes a bit longer to reach normal temps, and thus the heater takes longer to get hot since it uses the coolant temp.

I haven't noticed the blower being weaker either. It blows hard enough to blow your hair around if you face the vents at your face.

You're right about the LS computer in the first Legend, I'm glad to see it came back in the (2004 TL). Other than that I've found the G2 superior to the G1 in pretty much every way, 'cept the G1 feels a little more nimble and easier to toss around, but a lot less power.

Let's see, the G2 interior is not as open window wise as the G1, but look at how much the interior was upgraded, everything is bigger, so this is natural, compared to some of the other cars I've been in (even newer cars) the G2's visibility is pretty damn good!
