My Oil Analysis Results
Just got my results back, I'm still learning how to interpt these results but overall I'm very pleased with Amsoil. Here's what I know:
1. The low level of sodium and lack of any potassium suggest a healthy HG. The NEG glycol result reaffirms those findings. 2. My TBN 8.63 suggest that a oil drain interval of 12 months using Amsoil is not only safe but it could probably last to 24 months (under my driving/maintenance habits). All the lube oil additives/detergents (Magnesium, Calcium, Phosphorus, Zinc) are still very high. NOTE: My 12 month used motor oil has a higher level of TBN then brand new Mobil one (TBN 8.45) - new amsoil is 12.35 TBN. 3. The 0% H20 indicates I'm properly driving the legend enough to burn off any condensation that developed from the lack of use/storage. Good tip for buying a car with low mileage. 4. The silicon suggest the weapon-r filter element is adaquate (under 30 is acceptable). My initial concern was that the foam would let in to much dirt/contaiments. I may try a K/N to compare. :Update: On second thought - the of level silicon for 1K old oil is rather high. Those using an aftermarket intake, change your oil more frequently to prevent premature engine wear. 5. Internal wear is minimal according to the low levels of iron, copper, aluminum, chromium. Re-affirming the quailty of the 3.2L Honda Engine. Actual results: 1991 3.2L Type I (auto) Oil Type - Amsoil 5w30 (synthetic) Mileage - 61K Oil Sample - 12 months old (approx. 1000 miles) (all figures in ppm) Iron - 7 Chromium - 1 Lead - 5 Copper - 4 Tin - 0 Aluminum - 3 Nickel - 0 Silver - 0 Silicon - 24 Boron - 32 Sodium - 51 Magnesium - 687 Calcium - 2557 Barium - 0 Phosphorus 1048 Zinc - 1368 Molybdenum - 0 Titanium - 0 Vanadium - 0 Potassium - 0 Adamantium - 100% :p Fuel (%vol) - <1 H20(%) - 0 Glycol - Neg TBN - 8.63 Oxid - 22.0 Nitr - 20.0 Lab Comment - Results of test pereformed indicate no corrective action required. Sounds interesting... good information there. How much does it cost all-in-all for such an analysis?

Oil analysis cost around $20 (kit is normally free)
Amsoil is not available at local stores, but theres plenty of private sellers online and on ebay. Do a search on the internet for amsoil and you'll see what I mean. Try getting it from someone local so you save on shipping.

In my situation and driving habits - Amsoil is best. I need extended drain intervals since I drive less then 1000 miles a year. Amsoil has the highest TBN. Redline/Royal purple are formulated not for extended drain intervals but for racing. Mobil 1 is the 'best bang for the buck' but quality control has been questionable. I paid the same $$$ for amsoil, as I did for Mobil 1 - so the choice was simple. Depending on your situation, regular dino oil may work fine. i have been (my father, really) using amsoil since 92 when we first got the legend. my father is an AMSOIL enthusiast. he will forever stand by their products, and will never use any other brands if he does not have to.

Since its a 91 and you mentioned its primarily driven daily (TBN is not a relevant factor), I'm assuming you have over 100K miles. You also live in NY, so that would be stop-n-go (severe) usage. I would suggest standard 3 mnth/3K miles using Pennzoil High Mileage Vehicle oil, Mobil clean drive or Castrol GTX. All have lots of moly which is important for high mileage cars. Valvoline Max was recently reformulated and does not use moly anymore, so I wont recommend it. Stick with 5-30 unless your burning then go 10-30 or 10-40. or Mobil 1 every 6 months or 6K miles. Synthetic will not benefit you since in the long run it cost you more.

Okay well I have around 108000 miles on my legend ... I have been using Mobil one (syn.) ever since I bought my legend at 54000 miles and have had no oil consumption at all ... also when I talked about performance I really meant protection and I was wondering if there was a better syn. oil for my spec. application ??

Rmuzik411 - Mobil 1 is more then you need. It has a high amt of moly (crucial for high mileage cars) and you have minimal oil consumption. Change it every 6k and you cant go wrong. I still would submit a sample for analysis to rule out abnormal internal wear or the dreaded HG problem.
On a seperate note, the level of silicon in my oil gives me second thoughts about the aftermarket performance filters. IMO, those using this on there cars daily may want to change the oil more frequently or change the filter element. High levels of silicon will cause premature engine wear. Using a larger surface oil filter would also be recommended (NSX filters).
