I am now 1800 miles into my RL swap and she is overheating. Yesterday I was on my way to the parts store (about a 20 min. ride) and noticed my needle starting to rise. When I pulled in the parking lot and popped the hood, the RESV. tank was bubbling. I don't want to assume the worst, but I do know that is a typical sign of SHG/BHG. When I checked today, there seems to be no fluid in the RAD. or RESV. tank. I have yet to check anything else. Any ideas?

The first thing is make sure your fans are working properly. Also make sure you bled the system properly.

The fans did kick in when the resv. tank was bubbling over, and I did open the bleeder screw to let out some steam. I am planning to change all hoses and thermostat since the shop never installed the new parts on the RL. I have all OEM parts and will be addressing the cooling system. Prior to yesterday, there were no issues.

Rent a cooling system pressure checker from Autozone or O'reilly.

Fill your radiator, make sure you fill it with the air bleed screw open (12mm wrench).

With the engine cold, hook up the pressure checker and pump it up to about 15 pounds. You should hear any leaks easily since the system will be at pressure and yet the engine isn't running. No leaks? Move on. If any leaks, correct them first.

Again, with the engine cold, press up the checker to 15 pounds. With it still attached, go ahead and start the engine. It is not necessary to remove your thermostat. With the engine running, look at the pressure gage. Is the needle fluctuating? Bad. Is it steady? Not a BHG.

I REALLY doubt your new RL has a seeping head gasket.

Last OMG check. Crack your oil drain plug. Open it a ways, but don't remove it. Does any coolant come out? Bad.


Anyway, if you are losing coolant, not getting white smoke, and it's not in your oil, it's simply leaking somewhere. Differential cooling lines? It may be a slow leak, but it's probably slowly going away.

^^^ What he said. Easiest way to tell if your headgasket is blown just pull the dipstick. If it looks like a milkshake you know its bad.
Double check all hoses maybe somebody crossed a hose during the swap.
