OEM antenna... time to fix again... and do it right this time!!!
Guys,
I've just about had it with the OEM antenna. I've seen it all: clicking sounds, frozen masts, up when you don't need it down when you do... The thing is acting up again and I want to fix it right this time. I have two issues that I'm asking for your help with: 1. The infamous clicking sounds. - I replaced the mast and cable about 1.5 years ago. Helped a little for a little. Noise was back shortly. I think the problem is that the motor gear has oil on its teeth which makes it slip past the cable at the extremes and/or the clutch is not slipping well enough and drives the cable into the ground. Either way I did not open the antenna motor assembly at the time and I should have. I will buy a new mast and cable if I have to but this time I want to open the assembly and clean the oil and inspect the clutch. My question is: Is the motor assembly serviceable? Can I safely open fix and close? I have the HELMS and see the exploded diagrams of what goes where. My concern is that a few years back I opened one at a junk yard and couldn't put it back together. There is a spring in there that's a b**ch to put together. Any personal experience would be appreciated. 2. The similarly infamous don't-need-the-antenna-up-all-the-time - Part of the reason why these things go bad is because they damn go up and down all the time regardless of whether the head units need them or not. I don't want to just disconnect it because sometimes I do need it. I have also seen the post about the NSX "smartenna" and that's not quite the solution I need since the unit retracts the antenna only AFTER it has already been extended and more importantly it doesn't do anything when the tape player is used (or in my case the XM radio). What I am looking into is to have a manual switch that allows manual extension or retraction of the mast. My question here is: has anybody done that already? If not, and you feel competent, do you have any electrical/engineering suggestions as to how to do it? One solution that many of you prefer is remove the OEM antenna and replace it with something else but I don't want to go this route. My challenge is to fix what's wrong with this one. Thanks for any ideas!

I have a solution, rip it out and put an amplified S2000 replica antenna or something similar in place of it, check my sig. I found it on ebay, it fits perfectly and imo looks better than oem

Sorry, these are old pics and I couldn't find any up close, but I can tell you it fits very flush against the car.
![]() ![]() ![]() I originally bought the Shark II but they since changed it to a smaller base . I might even want to purchase the updated version too.

there should be an antenna thread
, cause mine's busted too, and i'm kinda missing the radio, what's involved in changing it to one of the s2000 antennas, cause i was trying to fix it and found out it's a whole little motor and everything, but ya, is it hard to switch it?

The Shark Attack has an internal amplifier so there are no need for moving parts. Its is VERY EASY to install, just plug the new antenna directly into the oem plug, then take the red wire (which is the power) and splice it into the factory harness. DONE. The antenna gets better reception than my old oem one

Let's keep the ideas flowing guys... So nobody found the stock antenna worth a second though? Still brainstorming about that manual switch...
