OK, I managed to get some decent pics of both sides of the front axles on my '95 coupe. Take a look at what I'm dealing with now...
Pictures of the boots So, the question is... in picture number 1 and number 4... what are these? Control arms? Tie rods? On both of these, the boot is torn right at the very end, and if I push them back, everything _seems_ ok inside. I'm hoping I can just remove the boots, clean and repack them with grease, and be on my merry way. Of course, the CV boots are another story. On the passenger side, the inner boot tore completely in half, right in the middle. On the driver side, the outer boot tore completely in half, right in the middle. In pictures 3 and 6, I'm holding part of the boot back with the jack handle, so that you can see what's left of the grease in the joint. I'm pretty sure in pictures 2 and 3, those are metal filings on the horizontal member under the boot. NOT a good sign!

Got any idea of how many miles are on those boots?
Hope there is no damage to the steering. There's lots of threads on the forum about replacing the axles and the CV joint boots. Good luck.

Well, I'm guessing there's 127,000 odd miles on there. I got the car around 75,000 and I don't think they had been replaced before. And I know I've never replaced them, which is why they look the way that they do.
![]() I certainly don't feel anything wrong with the steering. A little shimmy at high speed, but from what I can remember, that's always been there.

New CV joints both sides and a steering rack. Anything less wouldnt be worth it. With that kind of damage who knows how bad the insides are? Just do it and you will feel better when its done.

I would recommend replacing the axles. Even if the boots aren't torn yet, they still can deteriorate on the inside because of wearing out for that much miles.
Just for your information: BRAND NEW axles from Acura come incomplete assembly. Everything is assembled EXCEPT the inner CV. They require you to reuse your CV cylinder part that is connected to the differential. All I had to do though was clean all the grease out, repack it and put the bearings back in and reband it. The kit comes with everything though. New axle nut, bands, boot, grease. |
