porter cable 7424 -- best place to buy?

looking into buying one. I've seen many "kits" that include pads, and the like, and I think I'll go with a kit.

Pros and cons of a kit ?

I'm going to start looking seriously when I get home from work in afew hours.

I got my PC 7424 on ebay new for $99+shipping. This was just for the PC.

Bought a 5" backing plate for $15 and a pad/polish kit from Pinnacle Wax for $75

Amazon and other places usually have the PC priced around $115-130.

Amazon sells it for $119.95 shipped (possibly no tax depending on what state you live in) if you sign up for the Amazon credit card you can get an additional $30 off

My thoughts are that half of the pads that are included in this kit will see little to no use.

2 Yellow Cutting Foam Pads 6.5"
1 Gray Finishing Foam Pad 6.5"
1 Blue Finessing Foam Pad 6.5”
2 Cobra Microfiber Bonnets 6”
1 Lambswool Leveling Pad

Just get 2 orange and 2 white Lake County pads. I think most of the pads above are made by LC.

Also check your local lowes as some where clearing out the PC 7336 (same as 7424, just different counter weight) for $40-60 a while back. If you are only going to detail your cars and maybe for a friend here and there...don't get the lifetime warranty model. You don't hear of too many PCs breaking on any of the detail forums.

Menzerna polishes IP and FPII are very nice but a little pricey.

Optimum polishes OC and OP and nice for the price.

I use zaino on our car and for all of my customers. The new ZAIO and Clear Seal are outstanding products. Clear Seal is a product that you apply and watch it "disappear" into the paint in less then 30 mins. No buffing required.

thanks GM. I know very little about buffing a car with anything else but my hands.

Watching the "how to" videos on autogeek.net it looked as if the leveling pad and the microrfiber bonnets would do a good job of cleaning up the waxes to a nice shine.

I wouldnt totally discount that though. You only get a year warranty with the PC's but lifetime with meguiars. And with a guy who seems new to detailing (at least with a buffer,) it might be better to have a lifetime. And if your looking at spending a good $120 on a PC pay the $30 bux more for the meguiars one with a backing plate and polishing pad.

And i know that meguiars backing plate and pad cost a good $25 or so, so its really not that bad of an investment there.

Dave, Just do that by hand with a good MF. If you apply your waxes or sealants on the thin side they will come off very easy.

yea, but with the full sized Bronco (black) and the other Honda I could knock out all three with a porter cable in the same amount of time it would take me to hand wax just my Legend.
