Putting money into a 10+ year old car
I have been thinking a lot about spending money on the legend and was interested to hear what other people think.
A very common sentiment amongst Legend owners is why should one put any considerable amount of money into the car being that it has passed its prime and is no longer current. For me, comparing the Legend to other current comparable cars on the market, the amenities and overall feature set of the Legend is on par with almost all cars available today. What does the Legend really lack in comparison to other cars in its class today; xenons/hids, navi, mp3, bluetooth. All these things can be added through the aftermarket. So what else can deter someone from wanting to spend money on the Legend? Is it the fact that the car is "old"? Yeah its old in the sense that over 10 years has passed since the last one rolled off the assembly line but that doesn't mean that the car's performance and handling characteristics are also old. A lot of the technology put into this car is still in use or removed because it was too extravagant/not cost effective to put on a car in its price range (ie automatic door closing, rear windows going down for the coupe). Both of these technologies effectively died with the Legend (at least for Acura). Almost all the car's parts can be replaced with new oem parts or high quality aftermarket ones. The only thing that cannot be feasibly replaced is the chassis but that shouldn't be a problem for any decently maintained Legend. Put simply, the car can easily be put back into like new condition. Now, in terms of financial sense, to me it is much more logical to put $10,000 (and a gross exaggeration) into bringing the Legend I bought for $5,000 to 100% rather than pay that money into a newer car where I would have to make continued payments or buying a cheaper car that nowhere compares to the Legend. This is all based on the assumption that you want to keep the car for an appreciable amount of time. I care nothing for resale value because I don't plan on selling the car and understand the laws of car depreciation. To be honest, I don't think there are any front wheel drive cars on the market that are SIGNIFICANTLY better than the legend. So if I choose to maintain ownership of a FWD car, I would gladly put money into the Legend to keep it fresh and competitive, although it doesn't need much to do that!!! What do you guys think, what sways your money spending on the Legend? Are you worried about resale, do you feel the car is too far gone/old for repair, maybe the Legend just doesn't "do it" for you anymore, or do you just like changing cars every so often?

I don't change cars; I change wheels
. Part of not getting bored with a car is changing it up from time to time. Even after hundreds of thousands of miles and nearly four years, every time I get into the Legend, it feels like the first time.I plan on hanging onto the Legend for a very very long time -- until the cost of keeping it on the road exceeds what new car payments would be. So far it's been far from that threshold. I'm with you 100%, there's no car in my price range that has what the Legend offers, so I have no problem spending money to maintain the car because I know it will continue to give me reliable service. Besides, with each year that comes and goes, the Legend becomes more and more rare -- especially in good condition. I like being able to drive something that you don't see every day. As with any vehicle, a Legend can easily transform into a money pit, so you've got to draw the line somewhere -- but for me, I don't see that line on the horizon yet. |

i totally understand what you're saying. I've made this argument many times against people who bitch and moan about "why spend money in a 13y/o car"
From a logistics stance it makes sense. From a financial stance, it makes sense. But to people who need to have a new car or feel that there's something better than a legend for what it is (a reliable comfortable luxo/sport car)( ) then they'll argue it's not worth putting money into it and prefer to get something german, or the newest cheap hotness from japan. It never fails. Matt Ackermann (Honda Tuning Turbocharged Legend) decided it was smarter to invest in his G1 than to buy any current or new Acura, and his G1 is still running strong from what i've heard. |

I mean seriously, what FWD car out there today is so much better than the legend that it makes putting 5 to 10gs into it useless?

I see no problem at all with spending money on a Legend. For me, there is quite literally only one car on the road that I would rather drive than my Legend and that's the NSX. I'd say the same thing even if the Legend didn't have all of the goodies like leather and power everytithing. IMHO, it looks as good as anything on the road today and the rarity is a sweet bonus.

Well for me I have to say I've done spent a lot of money to keep my legend in tip-top shape ever since I bought my sedan from the dealer i had changed a whole lot of parts and such but at the end of the day I still love my legend sedan and to make matters worse I went and bought my 93 typeII coupe so that my sedan can have a little brother. lol

I would argue that you don't drop a lot of dough an a brand spanking new car that you still are making payments on/ that cost you $30K off the dealer lot. IF you want to mod up a car, you find yourself a reasonable $5K car and go to town on it. Either way, you will NEVER recoup the money you put into the mods or the car in general, but you still have the fun of doing the mods and at least you won't end up with a $30K clunker in the end.

Well, I've put in excess of $20K into mine and am going to fight State Farm to keep from totaling it. What does that tell you?

When I got my car about a month ago my girlfriend was confused. She kept saying 'why do you spend so much $$ for such an old car?' I told her she'll see and it's only been a month and she's beginning to see what I see (she wanted to take my OLD car over newer 01 camry to vegas!). Give it a few more months I just picked up a 95 bumper, new 17'' wheels sitting in the house, navi to come in near future, she's gonna luv it!
