question about tire sizes

I have a set of ATP Italia S5 17x7.5 rims +51 offset

I want to buy some new tires + 1 rim from tirerack (I broke a rim), what tire sizes should I look for? I thought it would be 215/45/17. But when I put 1 Italia S5 and 4 215/45/17 size tires, it tells me the tires I have are not the correct diameter to mount on the wheels in your cart. Why is that? I thought, only the 17 matters for mounting? I just want to make sure. Thanks!

you will probably be stretching the tire more with a 215 section on a 7.5" rim. Go for the 225/45 or 235/45. Your offset will support it as well.

Thanks for the reply Leon. So do you mean 215 tires won't fit at all or they will just not as well as 225?

they won't fit as well....you may notice more of the rim bead than normal, not to mention uneven wear on the meat of the tire.
