question for auto painters --

If I buy a trunk spoiler that is black, and want to repaint it gold can I scuff it, paint the gold over the black and have the gold paint hide/cover the black?

thanks

automotive paint/body specific stores. Atleast there are a few around here in the Western Washington area.

They carry some good quality wax products as well. Look up PPG auto paint in a google search and it might give you some local info.

Quanaman: Look around auto body shop places... I cant say exactly where because I know of a local shop here in so. calif. where i get mine

Dave Not really no matter how many times you paint it, itll still be a little dark. The trick is to primer it first, you can even buy an aerosol can from any auto parts, home depot, etc. "Primer finisher" is what you should get. Get a light grey primer and then paint over that. Youll need it either way so your paint will stick and dry good.
Good luck and dont paint it when its on the car or near it!!!! Lol!!!

LOL. Yea no painting while the car is anywhere near !!

I paint aerospace coatings, but I know nothing of car paints. But my guess was that it would take a scuff, primer, then topcoat.

thanks
dave

You need to clean with water and degreaser, scuff, prime (using a good sealer) and paint. Not knowing what is now on there, I would either take it all off or use an epoxy sealer/primer followed by a different colored primer and then refinish. Go to your local library and get a book on Autobody Repair and look in the section pertaining to refinishing. On my cars I always use an epoxy sealer and a poly paint. Expensive, but the best.

You have to use poly.... Thats what the dealers use, if you dont it'll look like you spray painted it.
