Question for those who personally replaced transmission mount

last night I changed the oil. While up on jacks I tried to take a look at the rear transmisision mount because so many say it fails.Unfortunately it has too many shields around it to see it clearly. The up and down movement of the rear of the transmission is zero but I can easily move it from side to side with my hands. While doing this I got a loud pop like a glass bulb breaking or something snapping like a weld, maybe a disclocated a CV joint or perhaps broken a plastic connector or oxygen sensor but the car ran fine afterwards. Perhaps it was just the jacks settling or the car popping into the park position - ignition locking. Anyway, how much sideways motion does a normal transmission mount allow when moving the tranmsmission by hand? I was getting about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch each way.

In your response please indicate whether you have PERSONAL experience with testing this component or not. Also, if you know the sound I spoke of explain that too. I was rocking the transmission sideways about 1/2 to 3/4 inch at a time gently and it was loud and quite frankly sounded nasty.

Send a message via AIM to Reno5658
Get it on a lift and have someone in the car shift in all gear ranges. If the mount is broken, the rear of the transmission will move up and down, especially from P to R or N to D4. Hope that helps. Just replaced mine awhile back.
