Quick question about tire sizing, the speed sensor etc...

Well i posted this in another thread but it went unnoticed so i pose the question again:

What tire size would you recommend for 18 inch wheels in order to keep the spedometer correct and avoid bumping etc and looks... Speaking of which, does the total tire diameter even affect the spedometer on this car, I suspect it would given the speed sensor likely measures rotational velocity of the bar leading to the wheel and thus with a larger diameter the speed would read low due to the fact that now the true rotational velocity of the tire would be increased with respect to the rotational velocity of the speed sensor...

well if youre getting 18's, any tire you put on it is still going to be bigger than the stock 15" tires and rims (or 16" in some cases), so the speedo is gonna be off no matter what. As for what size to get, i dunno...ill wait for someone else to chime in on that lol. But the larger the rim, the slower your speedo will read...

http://www.onlineconversion.com/bigger_tires.htm

when the speedo tells you that youre doing 55, youre really doing 66...when it tells you youre doing 65, youre really doing 78. Its just something youre gonna have to live with if you get a larger diameter wheel. I asked Ivan (B&O DK) the other day if there was something to be able to correct the speedo to compensate for larger diameter wheels, and he said no.

So there is no way to adjust the spedometer to compensate eh?

Hell that will drive me fricken crazy there has to be a way to correct it... Like so much so it would make me not want to get new wheels, i wonder how much 17's would mess it up.

use the conversion thing that i linked you to...you can enter in the diameter of the stock rim, and new rim, and plug in diff values for the speedo reading to show you what your actual speed will be...then i guess its just a matter of memorization...know that to stay within the 65mph speed limit, remember that your speedo will say like 54-55...

Yeah i saw that, seems nice. Im just thinking there has to be someone somewhere that can edit the value of the speed sensor output or something.

I asked Ivan (B&O DK) the other day if there was something to be able to correct the speedo to compensate for larger diameter wheels, and he said no.
Running larger rims like 18" rims doesn't mean you will hvae an over all diamter too much larger than the stock 15" rim/tire combo. For example. I went to check the specs on certain tires. For a typical stock size 205/60/15 Legend tire, the over all diameter is about 24.7" according to various manufacturers. Checking the same for 18" tires, the typical 225/40/18 tire that is normally used on 18" rims have an over all diamter of 25.1". Now, using that link you provided above and plugging those numbers into the calculator, you see that a stock 205/60/15 Legend tire running at 60MPH will still be very close to an 18" rims running 225/40/18 which will read 60.97MPH according to that links calculations. This is a non issue and you probably can't feel any difference within1-2 MPH anyway.

Going down the list of other typical tire choices compared to the stock size running a 60 MPH we have"
215/50/17=61.94 MPH
215/45/17=59.75 MPH
225/45/17=60.72 MPH

Anyway, the mistake you made when entering numbers in that calculator is you inputed the rim diameter of 15" for stock and 18" for aftermarket. You forgot about the tire diamter. Notice they ask for orginal tire diameter and new tire diamter? Your computations would be accurate if you drove on the rims only

At first I couldn't understand how you got a 10MPH difference. To get about 10MPH apart I had to enter sizes for a 305/40/22 SUV application Anyway, I finially figured out how you came up with your numbers when I put in the 15" and 18" sizes

yea, i thought a 10mph diff was a bit extreme too...i started learning about all this stuff about last week or so, and when i found that converter and plugged in those values, i thought something had to be up so i asked Ivan while we were talking on AIM, and he didnt really say anything about it...(probably busy lookin at pr0n, and didnt really care anyway )

*writes on post-it note*
"note to self...never...ask....Ivan...a question....while...hes...watching....pr0n..."
*spells it out loud while writing* "pee..arr...zero....enn"

:p
