Rattling noise front of engine when cold

Hi All,

I have a 94 with 200k and have noticed a rattling noise coming from roughly the center of the timing cover, above the main crank pulley up at the front of the engine, when the engine is cold. After its warm can't hear it. Any ideas? I recorded a video and will post when able but it's definitely a mechanical, irregular rattle. Sounds like a pulley but I can't seem to isolate it.

Cheers,
Dave

Have you checked the timing belt tensioner? I replaced the one on my '91 saloon, with the mileage at around 138k, after initially using the tried and trusted 'ear to the screw-driver' test. Another possibility could be the water pump....water pumps can often run noisily, but operate fine.

Thanks for the reply, LL :-) Best guess is indeed the tensioner so I'll take a screwdriver to it on the weekend and see. The belt was replaced for the second time by the previous owner at the stealer before I bought it, so they probably didn't replace the tensioner.

Thanks again.

Cheers,
Dave
