Unhappy Removal of drive pulley from crankshaft

I am in the middle of replacing my waterpump and stuck. I can't seem to break the hold of the bolt holding the drive pulley on. My repair book suggests using a chain wrench, but most people I have talked to said that it won't work. I have tried using a 3/4" drive impact wrench w/130 lbs psi but to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions to taking the drive pulley off?

Thanks

You will probably need a big wratchet with a pole stuck on the end to give it eneough torque to get it off. One member metioned, but didn't recomend, the idea of using this and just hitting the starter to knock it loose. I got to the point you are at and had to have her towed in to the doctor to finish the job. Good luck!

I've used the starter technique myself, and it's typical what most shops will do.

Here's the low down:
1. Make sure you KNOW which way the engine turns. In our case it turns clockwise while facing the engine, but double check. You have no idea what kind of damage you can cause by bracing the bar the wrong way.

2. Put the socket on a long breaker bar that can run from the pulley bolt to above the engine compartment.

3. Brace the breaker against some wood (1' long 2x4 for example), and brace the wood horizontally against a structural part of the engine compartment. Make sure it can't slip and crush the battery/fuse box, etc.

4. Disconnect the fuel delivery system (to be safe). Just a couple relays behind the kick plate of hte dash (driver's side)

5. Keep an eye on the setup, and have someone _very_ _gently_ kick the starter motor over. Just a fraction of a second in the start position will do it...

6. And voila, the starter will break the bolt for you, and you can just spin it off.

Note: Don't repeat this to put the bolt back on... get out that chain wrench/pipe clamp and tighten it down the best you can. Check it periodically to make sure it hasn't loosened again.

Cheers!

Contact Acura of Augusta.
Pulley Holder: PN 07MAB-PY3010A $63.18; and Handle: Holder PN 07JAB-00-1020A $59.69. Then all you need is a long 1/2 drive breaker bar, a 1/2 drive 19mm impact socket and about 3 ft of black pipe 1" in diameter.

I,ve done the breaker bar and starter method to remove my crank pulley. Yes our crank pulley bolt is very very tight. My impact wrench could not break the bolt free. Follow Nieja's advice it does work.

Send a message via ICQ to NickD Send a message via AIM to NickD Send a message via Yahoo to NickD
Or, if you don't have the means to kick the starter you can hook up some contraption like this with a large breaker bar and extension:
