sanding down fiberglass??

can you sand down fiberglass? if so, what kind of sandpaper do i need? i have this rust hole i have already bondo'd and then i put fiberglass over it. now im having a hard time trying to figure out how im going to smooth out the surface so i can paint. Help! thanks

iuno.. initially 600-700 grit? then move to the 1000's?
