I know alot of you don't really know me personally, and I only know some of you online...........but I've been on this forum a long time (over 1 year). I'm 19 years old, senior in highschool, and have had my Legend for about 1 year now. I haven't been posting much recently, just been busy, and also had been frequenting the car audio forums alot more since I was trying to put together my system.
Well last night I crashed my Legend...........its pretty bad ![]() Last Jan, I bought my Cashmere Silver Metallic 1994 L Sedan for $7400 and with taxes and all it came to about $8000, and then I've probably spent $1,000 on it at least. I was also about to drop in the audio system that I had been putting together, almost about $3,000, but now I don't know if I might have to junk the car or what. *sigh* I really can't beleive it......it sucks. It was my fault also..........and then afterwards I was so shocked I couldn't think straight and stuck around after the accident and got a ticket. Here's the story. Last night it was freezing rain a few hours earlier around 5 pm, and I went out with my lil bro, age 13, around 8 pm after my Dad kept insisting that I not go out becuase the roads were bad. We both told him that they looked perfectly clear from the winwo and then left. We were driving on 17c/Main St. in Binghamton, upstate NY. Neither of us were wearing seatbelts.......I always wear my seatbelt and make it a point for my passenger to wear it, but it just slipped my mind or something. I was going about 55-65 mph (don't remember) and in the left lane. It was a highway with 55mph speed limit. There was this bmw that had been following me very close for awhile that was behind me. He pulled out into the right lane and started to pass fast.......I hit the gas........was accelerating and then there was a van coming up close in front of me very fast. Was probably going about 75 and I changed my lane to the right lane in front of the bmw, to avoid the van..........and the road was wet and I also changed too quick I think. But I had to swerve to avoid the van............the car swerved too hard into the right lane and then I had to swerve to the left and the car started to fishtail. The rear end would swerve out to the left side and I would spin the wheel to the left and then the rear end would swing out to the right and I would swing the wheel to the right, this kept happening. At least that's what I think happened.............I am not sure........but I know the car was fishtailing left and right very hard..........I couldn't get it back under control. It was scary as hell. Well the car was still going full speed that way while I was fighting to get it back under control, it was during a turn on the highway. There was cars all around and at least 3 cars close behind me in the 2 lanes, the bmw was directly behind me. The car went off the turn fishtailing like that and hit the gaurd rail at a full head-on collision at that speed. The car hit the gaurd rail, the rear end snapped around from the force of the speed, and the car came back into the lane spinning around, still ahead of the other cars close behind. The car did at least 2-3 full 360's going straight in the same lane at high speed. It must have been going very fast forward and in the same lane while spinning becuase all the other cars behind had enough time to slow down and stay with my car right behind it and stop when my car stopped. When the car was spinning it felt like we weren't moving, and the world was spinning around us at high speed. I was holding down the brake and turning the wheel the opposite way of the spin. The car finally came to a stop in the other lane, left lane, probably some hundred feet from where it first hit the gaurd rail, facing the wrong way on the road. It was very far becuase no-one could see even close to where it had hit. The car came to a stop and I was just like "****!!"........... amazingly, both me and my bro were ok, Thank God. We both just sat there.............dazed. The van had stopped maybe some 20 feet back and the bmw had stopped right behind the van. I was so shocked I didn't even know what to do. The kid in the bmw came out and to my car.........I finally opened the door and looked at him and realized it was a kid from my highschool, in my class. Not close friends, but cool with him. He asked me if I was okay and if I need anything. He offered his phone and I used it...........here I made another mistake..........I wasn't thinking straight at all, and I called 911. I should have just checked everything out and bounced. The guy in the van said he heard a sound so loud (my car hitting the gaurd rail) that he thought I had hit him too..........but turns out no other cars had touched mine, mine was the only one involved. I should have left then, but I really didn't know what to do and I waited for the cops. Damn bltch cop gave me a ticket for speed unreasonable for conditions, even though I said I was going 55. She was a real bltch wouldn't listen at all, and talking in a nasty tone. Well the car.................the whole front end is gone. All the lights, corner lights, bumper lights, headlights, are all totally smashed or missing completely. The entire bumper is gone...........it must have broken up or came off upon impact of the gaurd rail.......the top part of the bumper frame or support is crushed and hanging out. The hood is jacked up pretty bad. The front half of it is messed up real bad but I don't think hoods can be repaired? It has huge dents and is basically crushed and bent back.........and the latch is jammed. The radiator is exposed possibly pushed back and I don't know if it is damaged. The radiator, AC, and cooling fan, are all smashed up I think. The grill is smashed. The headlight supports, radiator support, and bumper supports are all also messed up I think. Both of the front body fenders are also messed up, one is bad I think, while the other is not so bad. It was a high speed full impact, and one guy who "saw everything" said it was crazy..........I think he said "I can't believe your okay...........you're lucky to be alive". Both me and my bro, miraculously, were both fine, not a scratch. Thank God..........He saved us. I do not have comprehensive insurance on my car, only liability. Comprehensive insurance seemed too expensive at the time...........now it may have been worth it, depending on how much the repairs will be. My insurance just liability is like $1300 I think a year, and I think comprehensive comes out to like $3,000 a year for me anyway, so if we can get everything done under that then insurance wouldn't have saved us any money or helped us anyway. The first body shop guy who looked at it said "Just by looking at it, depending on price of parts, you're probably looking at about $3,000 to $4,000. I looked at the retail value of it, and it was $10,000, which surprised me." But I think that guy was too expensive...........and I should be able to find parts online and used at junkyards and stuff for cheap.........I am hoping to get everything done including labor within $1500. I took pics of the car with a digi cam but I don't know how to get them onto the computer yet. I will get them up as soon as I can. How should I get them online? Imagestation? Or can I link them in here from Imagestation? I will get the full estimate from the body shop guy, including a list of all parts I need by Thursday. Then I will take my car over to this other small private car dealer, he offered to let me park my car there and he said he would help me out finding cheap parts. I think he just uses www.car-part.com I can do that too, but my dad is saying just leave it with him and let him help us.........should I? If any of you guys have any advice, suggestions, or can help me in anyway, please do so and let me know. I am so stressed out and still in shock...............I guess I learned a lesson about driving carefully in bad weather and I am grateful for both me and my bro to be ok. Just sucks though...................*sigh* ![]() I had big plans for my car.......I had done limo tint already, done all clears, and just like that the car already looked elegant, aggressive, and clean. It just looked sick already. I was planning on doing the system next, then rims and lowering..............now my dad is like if it costs $3,000-$,4000 then we're not fixing it. We can sell it and buy you a cheap car.........I don't wanna pay this expensive insurance for this car anymore anyway. I will try to get pics for you guys if I can figure out how to get them off the digi cam to the comp. I installed the driver for it, installed the photosuite software, hooked it up to the USB cable, but just can't get the comp to read from it..........can't find anywhere in My Computer or the Photosuite software that shows or reads from the USB port on the comp. If anyone knows let me know. Aight guys, sorry for the longa$$ post.........I had to vent the full story out somewhere. I hope I can get everything done cheaply............if anyone can help, please let me know. ![]() -Imran.

Hey man I'm glad you and your bro are ok but, these cars won't be fixed for 3-4 k considering what happend to your car! A few years back my mom wrecked her Legend, identical to yours and her whole front end was gone!! It was much like what you are describing...with all the work done to the car I'm surprised it wasn't totaled!! Of course this was a few years back when these cars were worth more but the total cost of repairs was somewhere around 11-12 K!! This included major frame work, new OEM parts, and the paint job (that sucked)!! I'm sorry to say this man, but it looks like the Legend might be gone...but, it served it's purpose well and kept you and your bro safe!! This was one of the reasons I bought my Legend...both me and my mom were safe after the accident even though the other lady's car was on top of my seat!! Best of luck to ya...there's other Legends!!

hey man i know how you feel. it hurts, all the money you put into it and then poof! it's gone. Same thing happend to me twice now(one was my fault all the way, the other was some lady in a caprice hit me head on) i think you can get that repair bill down some by trying to find used parts, as long as there is no frame damage. good luck, hope it all works out for you!

A frontal impact is the most expensive to repair due to cost of sheetmetal/parts as well as the cooling/A-C parts. I just checked www.car-part.com site and some nose assys are available. What you want is from the cowl - front. I skimmed your msg (it was long) but didn't find any info as to whether or not any other part of the vehicle was damaged. This, of course, would add to the repair costs as more labor and paint time would be required. Did your airbags deploy? Again, more cost. You need to begin from a detailed repair estimate. At least you and your brother were not injured.

Thanks for all the replies. Yeah, most important thing is we are ok, and I am very grateful for that.
No other part of the car was damaged at all..........everything behind the front wheels is in perfect condition. The airbags did not deploy..........I wonder why? I am still hoping to get everything done under $2,000 with all used parts................I should have the complete estimate with list of needed parts by Thursday. Should I leave the car at that used dealership after I get the estimate and let him help me find the parts, or should I try to do it myself? What exactly is the cowl (hood?) and what does a nose assy consist of? Any help with finding parts or with anything else would be much appreciated. I also have pics on my comp now, if anybody wants to see or thinks it would help with giving a rough estimate. Where should I post them? Thanks guys.

You should be thankful that your alright, God was
looking after you.. As for the accident, I totaled a mint condition Turbo 280zx 3 years ago coming onto a highway and dipped on the gas too much.. Soon as I shifted and hit the gas the car turned and fish tailed.. Most people don't tell you this, but when that happens let off the gas. Most people try to drive right outta it, and that doesn't work. As for the repairs I would take it to a few different shops, and just rent a tow truck one day. Also, make sure you get full coverage next time, it's well worth it.. You could have had 10g's or more to put down on something else if it was totaled |

Yeah we will definitely get full coverage on it if we decide to get it repaired fully. And we are also very thankful to God for saving us.
Fishtailing the way my car did.........so forcefully and uncontrollable is something that really scares me. Is the Legend more prone to fishtail dangerously if you swing it to one side and then to another? It does seem to have alot of body roll during quick manuevers...........what could have prevented fishtailing like that and losing control? I want to understand why and how it happened so that doesn't happen to me again. My mom told me she drove past the spot today with my bro to see it............they saw my bumper still there and she said it was impaled into the gaurd rail pretty deep...........and that it must have hit with alot of force and took all the impact. My dad said the bumper did its job, it took the impact and came off and let the car go. Well thank God, he saved us, thats whats important.

As for Fish tailing The simple way to avoid is to go slower in the turns. That happen to me in a rear wheel drive 5 speed, I'm not sure why that happened with you in a Front drive auto. Now whenever it rains, I drive extremely careful, no goofing off |

Hi Imran, Thanks God you guys are doing good. From the pictures, it is very clear that it was very high impact crash and trust me Legend is a very strongly bulit car!
Well, I'm really hoping that you can buy used parts and fix the car up. BY the way here in California (near Sacramento) there is a Acura Recycling place called HAP Recycling. Call them at 800.999.9499 and ask them what all they have (once you get the estimate list). (www.haprecycling.com) I have bought parts from these guys - they are pretty good and reliable. I'm feeling sad for you after looking at the pictures. Another advice for you - drive slowly and listen to your dad. Dads give advice from their experience and trust me, sometimes their advice is really vauleable. Take care and hope you can get the car fixed soon! Good lUck! |
