solenoid cleaning?

I've read a ton of 1st gen Legend's near miraculous change in tranny behavior after the transmission solenoids have been beaten and cleaned out.

Are there solenoids in the 2nd gen? I haven't seen any discussions of such and I'm interested because I'm getting ready for a 3x-4x transmission flush as part of winter maintenance. I want to do the flush but I don't want to gum up the solenoids any worse than they may already be.

Is solenoid cleaning a part of the 1991-1995 Legend service?

My 1-2 shifts hard, engaging 1 from park is sometimes delayed, and there's a rpm flare when shifting 3-4 so I'm seriously considering the 4x tranny flush.

But I've heard about the flush gumming up solenoids - has anyone actually cleaned the 2nd gen Legend's transmission solenoids after the flush?

I attempted to get this answer a dozen times while having tranny problems with my CL. One place will tell you that you need a flush while another will tell you absolutely not to flush it.

I just wen't with the flush and it did not change a thing. New tranny from acura was 4 grand. Lots of fun.

I did this procedure, it requires removing the pan and dropping the valve body, not that difficult since the valve body is in one piece. The 2 shift solenoids and linear solenoid are mounted on top of the valve body. The torque converter lockup solenoids are mounted on top of the transmission, directly behind the EGR valve - very difficult to get to with the trans still in the car.

I wouldn't recommend doing it unless you having shifting problems. Cleaning them doesn't have the same effect as the G1's. The G1's only screens (filters) are between the valves and the inside of the transmission, so they are prone to clogging. The G2 has a traditional filter mounted in the pan, which prevents alot of that buildup. Also, the G2 has 2 shift solenoids and a linear solenoid, I still dont completely understand what the linear solenoid does, I asked Mike Diaz awhile back and never got an answer.

Thanks for shedding some light. My biggest concern was whether the flush could potentially make the shifting response worse by gumming up the solenoids.

At this point, looks like the clutch plate slipping because of new fluids inside the old tranny is the most likely probability (if the flush actually makes the response worse that is) - it has around 160k miles on it. Is it normal for that to happen? Will it go away after a time, I wonder...

Naah, shouldn't gum em up.. but having a slipping tranny is like having a pregnant girl. There no such thing as a half-blown tranny. If its slippin and the fluid is burnt theres probably no savin it 'cept for a rebuild.

I don't know either. I'll ask my rebuilder today.

I read a bad tranny mount may cause a flare, but I did my rear tranny mount 3 weeks ago. It felt a bit better for a couple of days, but the engine flare is still there. Maybe another bad mount?

Check your transmission fluid. Mine had an intermittant flare, and added 1/2 quart of fluid and I have been good since. If not change filter and fluid, and no a bad mount will not cause a flare.

^^ Thanks. I'll try that. I do think my tranny level is a bit low. I don't know what kind of tranny fluid is in there. I think Dexron II because I have a bunch of reciepts for my car mostly pep boys. Could I just pick up a quart of dexron II and throw it in till' I do the drain and refill? Will it hurt the tranny at all? I don't have much time right now for this.
