Starting Problem - Relay, Ignition, Starter?
I am a Newbie, and yes I have searched the forums for an answer but cannot decide which one solves my problem.
I have a 91 Legend sedan 5-speed. I had a starting problem a year ago and replaced the main relay and had no problems until recently. About a month ago it began not starting every 1 in 50 starts. Turn the key and the dash lights come on, but no cranking. If we waited about 10-15 minutes it would start again, or we could push start it. Now it's more like 1 in 5 starts. Same symptoms and it will always push start. I'm thinking it's the starter, but some threads on here made me think maybe it's the ignition switch or neutral safety switch. The battery is only 4 months old. Anyway to know for sure before I start replacing things? Thanks! |

It could just be your main relay again.

^^ that is a good answer..
anyways...you have a 5spd..Sometimes there is a glitch. I have had two in the last couple weeks. It is when you hop in fast and turn key fast while pushing clutch at same time...nothing happens or it acts like it is already running. Also, could be your neutral safet switch...that is hit when you press clutch to let it know when to start. good luck |

I thought the main relay only controled the fuel pump? I'd start with the neutral safety switch then the starter solenoid...

1. neutral safety switch- To check- when it won't start, hold the switch in start position then press down and release the clutch pedal several times vigorously. If it tries to start in conjunction with the clutch movement it's the neutral safety switch.
2. electrical portion of the ignition switch -to test- When it won't start hold down the clutch and work the switch rapidly from on to start and see if it tries to start. 3. starter- check for corroded or loose connections at the starter. 4. Battery- terminals corroded and check wher the ground wire connects to the vehivle 5. Starter relay- under dash fuse box. A bad ground connection is most likely to cause the problem you describe.
