Gentlemen, I have a 93 w/auto trans. In the last couple days I've noted a ticking noise when the car is in a standstill, transmission in D, brakes applied, and in an uphill. Should I apply fuel to move the car, shift away from D (to N, P, and R), or release the brakes the sound disappears. In a level or down-hill road no noise at all, only in an up-hill. The sound is a subtle ticking regular sound, with no grinding or irregular patterns. The noise tempo seems to be RPM related and develops somewhere under the hood.

Any ideas?

I have a 92 and i was told its common.. "i was told" mine seems to do it when its in need of and oil change. I changed my oil last week and after about a day or two with fresh oil it stops.. not sure if we have same problem. But just my experience.

Check your oil level (with car on level ground). The oil pump is in the front of the engine and if the hill you are parked on is steep enough, it might not be getting enough oil to the lifters....

Gentlemen, I just checked the oil and it is to the upper mark. Oil change was accomplished last Oct, using SAE 10W-40 full synthetic. I guess then a thinner oil will be in the next oil change.

My question, for inquiring minds want to know, why would the lifters sound in response to the transmission gear position?
