Thermostat and heater question, please help.

i was going to post this in the "all overheating questions here" thread but its closed. i read about 50 pages of it.im deployed right now and my wife has no idea whats going on so please help if you can.

my wife started the car and like all cold days put the heater on but today it was not blowing hot air but it was blowing air. as she was driving waiting for the hot air to keep in she saw the temp guage ping red so she pulled into the gas station and noticed steam and colant coming from the top of the radiator. once cooled down she opened the cap and noticed there was still hot coolant inside.
she toped off with water and continued driving with the heater off. No problems whatsoever but the temp gauge red all the way cold now. as she continued driving the temp guage went strait to its normal position in the middle. She turned on the heater to see if the cycle would repeat itself but it didnt.
Everything is working as it should. heater works fine, temp guage is in the middle and no leaks...

I think the thermostat maybe got stuck not allowing the coolant to cycle. i also read briefly that it can be the heater core??The car ran fine before this.

Any recomendations will be very helpful and i will pass all this info to my wife. thanks again guys

Sorry you are having trouble, this is the worse time of year for this to happen. If the heater core was bad the passenger floor board would be wet. The windshield would get a greasy residue on it and you would smell a sweet smell/coolant in the cabin.

I would start by getting a pressure test done on the radiator cap and cooling system. They can be rented at a local parts store or purchased from places like Sears. Try this and report back.

Thank you bigboy i will do that. my wife drove back home after work about a hour with no isssues what so ever. i told her to buy a new radiator cap and she topped off the radiator.

Maybe the thermostat got stuck??? the pass. floor wasent wet and theres no greesy residue. i get back from deployment in a few days. the car does have 180k miles and it does need a cooling system overhaul done.

If she bought a parts store radiator cap that will cause the symptoms you described. It's always better to use OEM parts when it comes to the cooling system. The system will also need to be bled to get the air out.

Big boy I asked my wife if the fans were coming on ad she said no!!! I told here to turn the ac on to see if the fans kicked on and she said they weren't. So we identified the problem.

That's because when legends over heat the hg is most cause so everyone jumps stright to the hg as the problem.

That will do it. Makes sure when you do replace thermostat that you use a oem because I blew a engine using one from advanced auto. I compared the oem and the advanced one side by side and they where totally different

The springs on the oem was longer,as well as more heavy duty. When the coolant was running in the system it wasn't releasing the coolant at the right temperture
