So I called up the local Acura Dealership to ask about a price for what I called, a transmission filter.
Kragen, and Autozone websites both listed it as a transmission filter kit...so I was going off this info in my price comparison. SO anyhow, I get parts on the phone and a young woman answers: Parts Girl: Parts this is Blah Blah how can I help you? Gabe: Hi, I'm looking for an automatic transmission filter for a 94 Legend. PG: Actually no Acura models ever used an transmission filter... G: (thinking ) No actually the 91-95 Legends did. PG: Nope...no Acuras have ever used a transmission filter. G: On the Legend, when you drop the pan, there is a small metal housing that is replaced...inside that metal box there is a screen or a filter or something...but you change it out like you would a filter... PG: I'm sorry but I've never heard of that and I've been here for five years and I'm sure that Acura transmissions have never used filters. G: Let me ask you this, when you guys do a transmission service where the pan is dropped, can you tell me what parts would be on the invoice? PG: I'm sorry I can't tell you that, let me get the service manager for you... ![]() Service Manager: Hello this is Brad how can I help you? I tell him what I'm looking for and go through almost THE SAME EXACT conversation I had with the parts girl... The Service Manager switches phones and gets to a computer with what I can only assume is an exploded view of the transmission... SM: I'm looking at the transmission right now and nowhere do I see a filter listed or named... G: Okay well maybe I can get a part number and call you back? SM: That's fine sir, but I can tell you right now with 100% confidence that Acuras have never used a transmission filter.... So I go to my computer, go to acuraoemparts.com, and in literally < 5 minutes had the part number: 25420-PY4-000.....#1 on this picture referred to as the strainer. ![]() So I call back ....I ask to speak with the Service Manager first since he's the guy overseeing the guys in the trenches... Gabe: Hi Brad we spoke a few minutes ago about the transmission filter, I just wanted to let you know that I found the part number-- He interrupts me... SM: Okay let me transfer you to my parts girl then because she will help you with that-- I interrupt him... G: Thats fine but I just want you to know that its referred to as the Strainer. When you drop the pan it is a little metal box held in with 3 ten mm bolts and it should be periodically changed. In fact, it seems that over time once it gets clogged, it will cause bucking and slipping symptoms that might be misinterpreted as a dying transmission, when a simple drain and refill of fluid and changing out of the Strainer might just be ALL thats really needed. Hope you guys have been changing those things when you get Legends in for service! I was bs'ing of course but I wanted him to feel as stupid as he made me feel only minutes earlier....So he's quiet for a few seconds and says okay, thank you sir have a nice day and transfers me to the Parts Girl.... I give the parts girl the part number and it comes up, she gives me the $40 price and I say: G: So yeah, looks like the Legend used a transmission filter after all...even though its referred to as the Strainer...it's tomAto tomOto I guess.....but now you know for the future ![]() PG: Well in the five years I have been here I have NEVER sold one... G: That doesn't mean they don't exist....I hope a bunch of people haven't had their transmission needlessly rebuilt when replacing this Strainer might have easily fixed their problem.... PG: .................................................. .........is there anything else I can help you with today? G: No...that'll be it...thank you! Fin.... |

WTF i work at a Kragen and not only do i know what a tranny filter is without being ase certified in parts, i would expect all my cashiers to know that basic info aswell.
hilarious.... some hondas (according to my parts database) actually have a filter that can only be replaced "when the transmission is dissembled", meaning there is no pan gasket... and the filter is not that easy to change i guess.

I don't know if what to say. That is a great and sad story all at once. So many people rely on the dealership to be the experts. They won't forget about that part in the future....but may not change their habits because their P&L will take a hit if they start changing out strainers rather than rebuilding/replacing trannys.

Dealer's suck, when I had just bought my car, I went to get service, then about a week later I got a nail in my tire, took it to get fixed, then the guy at the tire shop is like "man, this tire ain't no good" and sure enough that tire, plus 2 others were cracked on the inside walls, the wires were showing and everything... I got new tires the next day. So I was just thinking, didn't the dealer lift my car when they did service on it, and when they checked brakes and brake rotors, didn't they take off the tires??? man, you would think that they would let you know that your tires are about to blow as soon as you get on the freeway!!! When I went to get my seat belt replaced, the damn bolt came off like in two days...
took it back and they were like "umm.. yeah, we'll talk to the service tech... and have it fixed"

I had the same experience with two Acura dealers here; they tried to convince me that there is no easily replaceable filter and only a transmission repair shop can replace the filter thats inside the transmission.

yea, working there for five years dont mean anything... legends havent been made in like 11-12. lol
but yea, some people dont look outside the box and their knowledge is only based on what they can see on the computer screen. but then again, thats what most dealerships are right?

/\ werd, i'd have to agree. if they are both there not too long. they don't know that shit. which is what sux. the current tech's have no idea how to work on our cars, they don't know all little things WE know and the techs trained on to work on Legends. I would have loved to be a tech 15years ago and learning how to work on a 6spd legend. haha.
good stuff, its sad to know that the service manager hasn't been tehre long enough, and doesn't know things like that about the cars they are suppose to know. Hopefully they have a few older tech's working tere, who get the legends funneled to them. Thats the thing I like about the dealership near my house Pauly Acura in Highland Park, atleast the Parts and Service guys know our cars. Althou the parts manager, did NOT remember that the GS used a coupe lower radiator hose b/c of the typeII mounts, but atleast recalled something was different and asked me. |

I used to work at a dealer. They don't know shit. Especially about a car that hasn't been made since 1995. "Awe, you've been working here 5 years? That's cute, my car is probably as old as you? Whats up?" I'm glad I drive a standard shift and do my own maintenance. Effin stealerships.

Yeah I hear you guys....the sadest things about this dealership is:
1) Whenever I go there, I usually see at least one or two G2's in for service...probably old folks that can afford it, and the G2's are almost always in mint condition...who knows wtf kinda butchering one of these mint cars may undergo one day ![]() 2) This is NOT the first "I'm smarter than you" run-in I have had with this dealership... effing Acura Dealership!!!! Kinda Funny I guess.... |
