Throttle body cleaning......

I read this in consumer reports review about our car. It was talking about general problems:

Engine noise: Carbon buildup on the piston rings may cause piston slap. The fix is to clean the carbon using GM Top Engine Cleaner sucked in by way of a vacuum port on the throttle body.

Has anyone tried this? Is it effective? Where exactly is this vacuum port? I wanna try....

i just let the oil change place do this for me and it helped 50%. They ran that stuff thorugh whereever it was i forgot but i did watch. Then took the car outside and reved it up for about 15min with just clouds and clouds of smoke coming out. Smoked for at least 2 days cleaning itself then quit. Was worth every penny.

nah this is something they have that they run to a vacume hose of the throttle body or something and hang it up and it just drips into your motor while it is running i think it was running. Ask a valvoline or somewhere like that about it

i used to have a friend that worked at jiffy lube and he did this on my old cavalier for free and that **** blew dark smoke for like 10 min. So when i got my legend i had it done and no black smoke at all NONE it was crazy it made me feel good about the condition of my car having just bought it at 92,000.

Edited:

These directions are from BG.

BG Products 3 PartSTAGE 3 (Throttle Body & Carburetor Cleaner)is only required on engines equipped with throttle body fuel injection or a carburetor and will not harm them. (NOTE: DO NOT USE ORDINARY CARBURETOR CLEANER ON NEWER TEFLON-COATED THROTTLE BODY MODELS AS IT IS CAUSTIC AND CAN DAMAGE THEM)

1) With the engine off, disconnect the air intake boot from the throttle body or remove the air cleaner cover from the carburetor. Spray about half of the contents of the BG Throttle Body Spray can into the throat while working the butterfly valve back and forth. Start the engine and spray the remainder of the can contents into the throttle body or carburetor using short spray bursts. Reconnect the air intake boot or air cleaner and let the engine idle for at least five minutes or drive the car at once.

-------------------------------------------------

BG Intake Cleaner with FeederSTAGE 2 ( BG Intake Manifold & Combustion Chamber Cleaner)

1) While the engine is still running, remove a vacuum hose from the PCV Valve, brake power booster or highest convenient vacuum hose from the intake manifold (make sure it does not lead through any plastic tees or check valves) and connect the FI01002 (reusable) or the FI1002-D (disposable) feeder kit to the hose making sure the brass valve on the feeder kit is closed. Use CAUTION to make sure the feeder kit hose is clear of the radiator fan and exhaust manifold.

2) Adjust the engine speed to 1200 - 1450 RPM except turbo engines which remain at idle, OR you can leave all vehicles at idle, it takes a little longer. DO NOT RUSH, THIS STEP SHOULD TAKE 6 TO 9 MINUTES !

3) Connect the #FI01002 (Reusable feeder to hood or under hood latch to support I.V. Bottle) (*Disposable feeder, attatch product bottle to hood)

4) Close the brass valve on Part #FI01002 (Reusable Feeder)and pour entire contents of STAGE 2 (Black label) cleaner into the bottle of the part #FI01002 feeder kit bottle. Slowly open the brass valve on the feeder to allow the STAGE 2 cleaner to flow slowly through the vacuum line. (*This Procedure is the same for Disposable feeder) The engine may shake during this process. If the engine should stall, close the brass feeder valve, restart the engine and continue.

5) When the entire contents of the feeder kit or product bottle have been pulled into the engine. Shut off the engine, remove the feeder kit or product bottle, reconnect the vacuum hose and return the engine idle to normal.

NOTE: If Lowered emission readings are desired, take them NOW, before the next step.

You could let it idle or rev it until the bottle is empty.

is this a responce to my question?? cause i dont have this cleaner your talking about that hooks to the vacum hose , i have a can of spray throttle body/intake cleaner.

I don't know what kind of throttle body spray you are talking about. If you are reffering to the aerosol can with the plastic tip, like wd40, then I can help.
1) Let engine cool
2) Remove intake from your throttle body
3) Spray throttle body cleaner on the outside and inside of the throttle body butterfly.
4) Let it soak a sec. then wipe it up with a dry lint free towel
5) Put the intake back on, and go

I have done this regularly for a lot of different cars. In each I, and others, have noticed improvements, but they usually wear off after about 3k miles. I hope this is what you were asking for!
Later!
